SDG 1: No Poverty

Ending Poverty: A Global Commitment

In 2015, the United Nations established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the first goal being “No Poverty.” This ambitious goal aims to eradicate poverty in all its forms worldwide. The official wording, “No Poverty,” reflects a powerful commitment to “Leave No One Behind” and prioritize those furthest behind.

The Focus of SDG 1:

SDG 1 targets the eradication of extreme poverty, which includes the lack of food, clean drinking water, and sanitation. It emphasizes not only the immediate needs of those living in poverty but also the services and social policies that can either alleviate or perpetuate poverty. The goal also addresses new threats such as climate change and conflict that exacerbate poverty.

Targets and Indicators: SDG 1 consists of seven targets and 13 indicators to measure progress. The five outcome targets are:

1. Eradication of extreme poverty.

2. Reduction of all forms of poverty by half.

3. Implementation of social protection systems.

4. Ensuring equal rights to ownership, basic services, technology, and economic resources.

5. Building resilience to environmental, economic, and social disasters.

The two targets related to means of implementation are:

1. Mobilization of resources to end poverty.

2. Establishment of poverty eradication policy frameworks at all levels.

Current Status and Challenges:

Despite ongoing efforts, 10 percent of the world’s population still lives in poverty, struggling to meet basic needs such as health, education, and access to water and sanitation. Extreme poverty is particularly prevalent in low-income countries, especially those affected by conflict and political upheaval. In 2015, more than half of the world’s 736 million people living in extreme poverty resided in Sub-Saharan Africa. The rural poverty rate stands at 17.2 percent, compared to 5.3 percent in urban areas (as of 2016).

Measuring Poverty:

Key indicators for measuring poverty include the proportion of the population living below the international and national poverty lines. Other indicators are the proportion of the population covered by social protection systems and those living in households with access to basic services.

Conclusion:

Achieving SDG 1 requires a comprehensive approach that addresses immediate needs and long-term solutions. By mobilizing resources, implementing effective policies, and ensuring equal access to services, the global community can make significant strides toward ending poverty in all its forms.
