The SCS Diploma: What it means to me

The SCS Diploma: What it means to me

Now as examiner and author for the SCS Diploma unit on legislation, my relationship with? the course is very different to my first experience on the other side of the learning journey: as a student.

I have worked in the cosmetic industry for over 25 years and began my journey neither specifically focussing on regulation nor cosmetic science, but like so many others of mine and previous generations, found the industry rather by chance.

The early years

At the age of 16 I was fairly sure that I wanted to teach but wasn’t entirely sure of my exact direction so was advised to take national curriculum subjects at A level. Music was my automatic choice, maths a close second and then I was advised to add a language (German).? After A level, I decided to study music at the University of Sheffield where I then discovered a passion for the psychology of music, in which I completed a Masters Degree.

At almost 23 I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do next although I knew that teaching wasn’t it after all!??

Entering the world of work

My first role out of university found me at the Cosmetic Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) working in an administration role.? An open environment, I soon started to learn a great deal about the industry and the technical and scientific aspects relating to the manufacturing of cosmetic products. My passion for science, something I’d left behind me at 16 was reignited.? I found out about the SCS Diploma but at this stage I didn’t have any A level science subjects so wasn’t eligible to apply.? But I found some science modules available from the Open University that plugged some of the gaps and so a few years later, I was able to start my Diploma.

I was still working full time at CTPA (who sponsored my studies) but I managed to complete my Diploma in one year.? It wasn’t easy but I am so glad that I did it. The knowledge I gained during that year has helped me to develop within my own career pathway for many years after as well as give back to my employers.

My current role

Now as Regulatory Affairs Director at Bloom Regulatory, my day-to-day role involves assisting brands with their compliance and regulatory strategy but I couldn’t do all that I do without the background understanding I have of cosmetic products, including: the formulas, the structure of the skin and hair, the science of colour and fragrance, how surfactants work, thickeners and product rheology, stability, microbiology, safety, aerosol technologies, product efficacy evaluation, market research and claim substantiation.

There are now many opportunities to enter the field of cosmetic science through university but for anyone who, like me, initially embarked on a different path, I would urge consideration of the SCS Diploma.? It isn’t always possible to have our time again at university but it is never too late to make a change!
