SCRUM vs PMBOK framework
How comes a 19 page framework competes with a 756 page framework?
I want your opinion answering this question by commenting on this article. However, here are my thoughts!
Different Concept
PMBOK is based on a different concept than SCRUM
PMBOK concept: You can successfully manage a project by learning about the experience of others in managing projects. The PMBOK is the accumulation of the experiences of many project management practitioners. This is why it gets bigger in every new edition.
SCRUM concept: To succeed in approaching a complex problem you have to do your own learning about that problem and adapt your methods based what you learn. So do not restrict yourself to the experiences of others, because in complex situations you have to keep your options open.
Different Context
By history, PMBOK guide is coming from the traditional school of management that is based on extensive planning and documentation, and being strict in following processes. PMBOK 6th edition suggests using 49 processes to manage a project, 24 of them belong to the planning process group.
SCRUM is coming from the agile school that considers extensive planning and documentation as obstacles and could be reasons of failure when approaching a complex problem.
Conclusion
This is not to say that one of the frameworks is better than the other, but each has its place.
