Scrum Master vs Scrum Master Transverse : What's the Difference?

A Scrum Master and a Scrum Master transverse both work within Agile frameworks, but their scopes and responsibilities differ:

Scrum Master:

  • Focus: Dedicated to one Scrum team.
  • Responsibilities: Facilitates Scrum ceremonies (daily stand-ups, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives).Ensures the team follows Agile practices. Removes team impediments. Serves as a coach and mentor for the development team and Product Owner. Shields the team from external distractions to improve productivity.

Scrum Master Transverse:

  • Focus: Works across multiple teams or an organization (transversally).
  • Responsibilities: Coordinates across several Scrum teams, often in large organizations or scaled Agile environments. Aligns teams with organizational goals and strategies. Facilitates cross-team collaboration, ensuring teams communicate and share resources. Manages interdependencies between teams, especially in a scaled framework like SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework).Helps foster a consistent Agile culture across the organization, influencing teams at different stages of Agile adoption.

The key difference is that while a Scrum Master is typically embedded within a single team, a Scrum Master transverse has a broader scope, supporting and enabling multiple teams or even the whole organization in its Agile journey. This role is critical in large-scale Agile environments where coordination between several teams is essential.
