Scrum Learning: Scrum roles
Who's on the Scrum team? What are their roles? Read about it in the second part of our “Scrum learning” rubric.
The Scrum Team consists of the Product Owner, the Development Team, and the Scrum Master. Scrum Teams are self-organizing and cross-functional.
The Product Owner
The Product Owner's task is to maximize the value of the product. In this case, the way it is achieved can be different from team to team. The Product Owner is the person responsible for managing the Product Backlog. In Product Backlog management you:
??Express Product Backlog items clearly;
??Order the items in the Product Backlog to achieve goals and missions better;
??Optimize the value of the work the Development Team performs;
??Ensure that the Product Backlog is visible, transparent, and clear to all, and shows what the Scrum Team will work on next;
??Ensure the Development Team understands items in the Product Backlog to the level needed.
The Development Team
It’s group of professionals, which works on current task. Development teams have the following characteristics:
??They are self-organizing. No one (not even the Scrum Master) tells the Development Team how to turn Product Backlog into Increments of potentially releasable products;
??Development Teams are cross-functional, with all the skills as a team necessary to create a product Increment.
??Scrum doesn’t recognize titles for team member and sub-teams in Development Team.
??Each member of team may have special skills and areas of focus, but accountability belongs to the Development Team as a whole.
The optimal Development Team size includes more than three and less than nine team members. The Product Owner and Scrum Master are not included in this count.
The Scrum Master
The Scrum Master is responsible for promoting and supporting Scrum in the organization. Scrum Masters do this by helping everyone understand Scrum theory, practices, rules, and values. He or She is a servant-leader:
??He or She ensures understanding of goals and effectiveness of management.
??He or She coaches the Development Team in self-organization and cross-functionality.
??He or She facilities Scrum events, leads the organization in its Scrum adoption.
??Causes changes that increases the productivity of the Scrum Team
Scrum is a framework, that works efficient when all members implement their roles. So, Scrum brings your company to the next level. Don’t forget to read about Scrum artifacts next Friday.
