Scrum, Kanban, Scrumban, ..., and now SAFe?

Scrum, Kanban, Scrumban, ..., and now SAFe?

Recently I have been seeing more and more people getting SAFe accreditations. Accenture prioritized this training for managers and above, and some program management roles started listing this certificate as a requirement. To be honest, I was skeptical. How much can you learn in 3 days?

As a leader of the Learning & Development action group, I decided to take this training and certification so I could understand its value and advise others on whether to pursue it or not depending on their objectives.

Short Summary:

  1.  What is SAFe?

The Scaled Agile Framework or SAFe methodology is an agile framework for development teams. It solves some of the challenges larger organizations have when scaling agile and lean practices. It centered around customers and focuses on a big picture of how work flows from product management through governance, program, and development teams, out to customers.

  1.  Why SAFe?

This framework integrates principles, practices, and competencies for achieving business agility using Scrum, Kanban, Design Thinking, Extreme Programming (XP), DevOps, etc. All the cool things that we know about modern software development! Think about it as a roadmap on how to put the pieces of the puzzle into one big picture.

  1.  SAFe vs Scrum and others

Imagine you are leading a program that contains several Scrum teams, each of them has their own sprints and delivery schedules. It's challenging to integrate teams at the Program or Portfolio levels and that's exactly what SAFe addresses! So Scrum is used to organize small teams while SAFe is used to organize an entire enterprise consisting of many teams and levels.

The "Leading SAFe" course was fun, dynamic, and informative. Instructors used the Mural digital workspace to drive discussions and ideations rather than using traditional lecture methods. After the course completion, all participants received access to the scaled agile community website and materials required to prepare for the SAFe Agilist certification. I recommend the SAFe training and certification to Project, Program, and Portfolio Managers.

Thanks for sharing, Viktoria! Just this morning my agile coach advised our program team to take the Leading SAFe course as we’re launching an ART. We’re on the journey to change our mindset and adapt to SAFe ways of working. Look 4wd to learning more!

Great perspective Viktoria! This was really helpful in helping me understand what value the SAFe trainings and certifications can provide.
