Scripps. Giving Passion a Place to Shine.
Career growth can take many forms. It might be a ladder, or it could be a more circuitous route. At Scripps, we let you write your own story by providing opportunities for change and advancement. We aim to see you thrive. To shine. Bright ideas and an entrepreneurial spirit are welcome here. This is a company where potential is limitless.?
Throughout Scripps, we have many examples of career growth. Laura Tomlin , chief administrative officer, exemplifies the qualities we strive to promote: passion, promise and purpose. In just 12 years, she took her career from the front lines of recruiting to a front-row seat in the company – making critical decisions as a member of the senior leadership team.
“I’m a prime example of talent as a shared asset,” Tomlin said. “You will have stories that clearly demonstrate that this company values different perspectives, levels of experience and different backgrounds.”
Tomlin’s background – in recruiting – was at the forefront of what she called a “career crisis.” She was working at another company when she questioned whether she wanted to stay in recruiting and reached out to client and mentor, Robyn Hildal, Ed.D. (retired from full-time work) , former head of talent and diversity at Scripps, to share her concerns. She let Hildal know Scripps was at the top of a short list of companies where Tomlin wanted to work. It wasn’t long before Scripps posted a position to lead internal recruiting.
Tomlin interviewed with a handful of individuals, including then-CEO Rich Boehne. The two learned they were both from Kentucky. “The way he engaged me was so normal. We were just having a conversation. To feel that level of comfort, it was sort of a slam dunk to want to join Scripps,” said Tomlin.
Tomlin began her Scripps career in 2010 as senior manager, recruiting, with a three-person team, including herself. Adam Symson (now CEO) was one of her first clients as head of interactive. Symson focused on digital at the time, and Tomlin was full of questions about how the digital business operated. It was that innate curiosity that later prompted Symson to name her to his leadership team in 2012 as senior director of human resources, digital. Just two years later, she moved into yet another role: vice president of human resources.
Tomlin became a trusted advisor for Symson. “He saw more in me than I saw in myself,” said Tomlin, who went on to build a division, create processes and philosophies and influence counterparts. Tomlin’s timely questions throughout each step of the process helped pave the way to her next position as vice president of digital operations.
Tomlin credits her journey to an environment where questions are encouraged. She believes challenging the process helped carry her to each new role, and equally as important – helped her earn the respect of her colleagues, many of whom, unlike Tomlin, grew up in media.

With the acquisition of Newsy (now Scripps News), there was a lot of change. Scripps created other businesses, tested apps – everything digital and consumer-facing. And, after just three years, Tomlin had a team of professionals – more experienced in the industry – reporting to her. “We are willing to put people in positions of leadership who bring a different perspective, and that’s why I am where I am today,” she said.
In fact, every role in the company – outside her current one – was a new role for the organization. Symson next tapped Tomlin to be senior vice president of national media in 2017. There, she oversaw a collection of brands focused on where consumers spend their time. That was her longest stint in one position thus far – at 3.5 years.
“Adam believed in me. He gave me an opportunity to make an impact on the company,” Tomlin said.
She was also quick to thank her peers for enabling her to become a successful leader.
“They let me fly,” she said. “They let me spread my wings … I have been in the trenches with so many co-workers, and they are always there for me. That’s a reflection of the company culture we have and why we’re so successful.”
