Screen Time, Myopia, and Dry Eye: A Growing Concern for Children's Eye Health
Treehouse Eyes
Treehouse Eyes is a pediatric specialty eye care business focused on treating myopia (nearsightedness) in children.
Myopia Musings
A recent study in China found that myopic children are more likely to experience dry eye compared to non-myopic children. The study, which involved 1,269 participants aged 6 to 18, revealed that myopes had a shorter noninvasive tear break-up time (NIBUT) by one second, with only 49.9% achieving a NIBUT of 10 seconds or longer, compared to 67.8% of non-myopes. Additionally, 3.6% of myopic children had dry eye disease, whereas none of the non-myopic children did.
?Researchers suggest that the significantly higher screen time among myopic children compared to non-myopic peers may be a contributing factor to this issue. The study raises alarms, particularly as myopia rates in China continue to climb, potentially leading to a surge in dry eye cases in the future. With myopia projected to impact five billion people by 2050, the connection between myopia and dry eye could emerge as a critical concern for eye care professionals worldwide.
