SCOTUS has ruled. Now what?

SCOTUS has ruled. Now what?

How to take action to address homelessness in a post-Johnson v. Grants Pass country.?

Despite the clear need for a safe place to sleep, the Supreme Court ruled that people experiencing homelessness are not protected against tickets, fines, or arrests for sleeping outside.

This decision is far from the final say on how we will respond, both as communities and as individuals.

It was true before the ruling and it's even more apparent now — homelessness will become rare and brief when those experiencing it are known by name and when leaders choose solutions over criminalization.?

So what can we do now?

1?? Promote a new understanding of homelessness — it’s a solvable systems problem.?

2?? Support local organizations.?

3?? Advocate for your community to gather and share quality, real-time data on homelessness.

4?? Share the message that criminalization is harmful — and that proven solutions exist.?

?? In the words of a service provider

"Our community stopped using punitive interventions and started investing in more temporary and permanent housing options about 14 years ago. The trend in our homelessness, except for anomalies during difficult times, has been downward." — Built for Zero community member

More proof that fines and arrests don't work.
