SCOTUS Has Expressed A Desire To Send Marriage Rights Back To The States–What Can You Do?

If you have not already heard, the newly conservative Italian government has begun issuing new birth certificates to children of LGBTQ+ couples, removing, yes, removing the names of non-biological parents. Only those with a biological connection will have parental rights. Rights that apply to everyday situations like authorizing medical care. More severely, if a child’s biological parent died, that child could be taken away from the living parent, turned over to relatives or taken by the state.??

While this isn’t currently happening in the US, it isn’t a stretch anymore to see that it could be soon. With this current, deeply conservative Supreme Court that recently gave businesses the right to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people in the 303 Creative decision and also removed the federal right to a safe and legal abortion across this country– all precedent is up for grabs.?

This is especially true if Obergefell v. Hodges, the court case that struck down bans on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional, effectively bringing about marriage equality in the USA, is overturned.? 32 states have same-sex marriage bans in their state constitutions and/or legislation, and some 205 million Americans are living in places where the Supreme Court could make same-sex marriage immediately illegal. The video below quickly explains why the recently passed Respect For Marriage Act will not protect couples in these states. If you are wondering what you can do now, we answer that as well in the video.

Next week, we will be posting a list of all the states that have anti-marriage equality laws still on the books, where you can go and what you can do to help get them removed. Stay tuned.

If you’d like to go deeper into the disgraceful 303 Creative decision, Time magazine just did a deep dive titled:

As many of you know, one important piece of the The JustMarried Project is a coffee-table book filled with LGBTQ+ heroes who bravely came out, told their stories and helped bring about marriage equality.? Books are so very vital to maintaining our existence and keeping our history alive for future generations. As many of you know as well, LGBTQ+ book bans are at an historical high in the US.? Well recently, a couple of women in San Diego attempted their own form of 'book ban', informing the head librarian at the San Diego Public Library, that “they had gotten nearly all of the books in the Pride display checked out and would not return them unless the library permanently removed what they considered “inappropriate content.” Well that was a big fail–as when reported, people donated over $30,000 to replace the books and to add more funding to LGBTQ+ library programs. Whoop!
