Scottish Livingstone Hospital Lab Accredited

The Scottish Livingstone medical laboratories have finally been accredited by the Southern African Community Accreditation Services(SADCAS). This was done in a ceremony that was attended by a number of dignitaries amongst  them the Bakwena paramount Chief Kgosi Kgari, Honourable Minister of Health Dr Edwin Dikoloti, Minister of Presidential affairs Honourable Kabo Morwaeng, Kweneng North MP Hon Regoeng, Deputy chief of Mission US Embassy, SADCAS Representative Ms Maureen Mutasa and the Bummhi Chief Executive Dr Ndwapi Ndwapi.

In giving an overview of the journey travelled to reach accreditation, the Head of Lab Ms Peggy Sechele said:

“it has been a long journey of 10 years when the lab staff and management put down a vision and started chasing the dream. In 2010, there was a SADCAS audit which we failed. In 2018 we had WHO SLIPTA audit and we qualified for one star. In 2019 we received our two star status, and in 2020 Bummhi started giving mentorship to the lab through Mr Ophias, which led to the acquisition of four stars in April 2021. It was after this achievement, that a recommendation was made for application to SADCAS for accreditation. In August 2021 on the 30 and 31st, there was a two day intensive SADCAS audit in the midst of COVID-19 which gave recommendations with few non conformities. Finally, on March 2022 the lab ultimately got accredited to a five star facility.”

 She went on to thank Bummhi for their technical support and their payment of initial application and assessment fees which amounted to P173, 730. Their promptness during equipment downtimes and ensuring supply of reagents to avoid interruptions of services was of great importance.

The standard of the requirements that binds all laboratories is the same and that is in ISO 15189:2012. This international standard specifies requirements for competence and quality which are particular to medical laboratories. “It is within our mandate as the laboratory service to comply to the standards so that all patients receive quality services irrespective of where they are situated.” She added. That is what the SLH labs are currently proudly doing.

In handing over the accreditation certificate to MOH minister, Ms Maureen Mutasa SADCAS  (Southern African Development Community Accreditation Service) said Scottish Livingstone Hospital Laboratory is the eleventh medical laboratory to be accredited in Botswana and the 91st in the 14 SADC member states to be accredited by the SADC Accreditation Service(SADCAS). It has been to the international standard ISO 15189: 2012 and has been granted a unique accreditation number MED 096 indicating that the laboratory is now international. The certificate is valid for five years up to 15th March 2027.

The Lab was reminded that SADCAS will undertake periodic surveillance assessments to ensure continued compliance with the requirements during the validity of the certificate. Nonetheless, in event they find a drop in standards they will not hesitate to withdraw the accreditation.

In receiving and appreciating the accreditation certificate, the Honorable Minister of Health Dr Edwin Dikoloti said the accreditation by the Southern African Development Community Accreditation Services (SADCAS), means that a lot of effort was put in ensuring that the facility adheres to high scientific standards as expected in all labs of its caliber.

He said it gave him great gratitude and confidence that the services offered to people are top notch since their quality has been authenticated by reputable institutions like the SADCAS.
