This is a story about Scottish husband and wife bad actors who have more “front” than a Myers Department Store.
?Edwin and Lorraine McLaren were responsible for Scotland’s longest ever criminal trial with a 20-month trial costing an estimated £7.5m.
?The McLaren’s preyed on vulnerable people by arranging for the title deeds of their homes to be transferred to McLaren’s associates without the victims' knowledge. Edwin was jailed for 11 years in 2017 and defrauded victims of £1.7 million pounds. Lorraine was jailed two and half years and defrauded victims of £128,000. During the criminal trial the court heard the McLarens spent the fraud proceeds on the couple's lavish lifestyle which included luxury holidays in Dubai, spending £100,000 on a ring for Lorraine and private schools for the McLaren children.
During the initial proceeds of crime hearing in 2021 the McLaren’s and the Crown agreed only £4,000 could be recovered from the McLarens at that point in time
?In 2023 the Crown returned to court seeking to seize more assets from the McLarens. Edwin representing himself in the latest proceedings argued the Crowns "malicious" proceeds of crime action was impacting his health and stopping him and his wife from accessing their pensions and had deprived his daughter of a quantity of jewellery.
?The Court has refused to grant McLaren’s application and ordered the McLarens to return to court later date ?
