Scott Awarded SNB SLS Assessor of the Year

Surf Life Saving Australia is one of the world’s largest volunteer non-profit organisations with over 190,000 members who give up their time to keep the beaches around Australia safe. That is a massive number of people that are engaged and committed week after week--without being paid for their time!

Living close to the South Curl Curl beach on the northern beaches of Sydney, my wife and I got involved in the surf life saving club when our eldest daughter joined Nippers. ?Surf Clubs run Nippers education and fitness programs to teach children (and adults) about beach and ocean safety and helps build up their skills.? As our kids got older, we became more involved first earning a Bronze Medallion then joining South Curl Curl SLSC on patrol to keep the public safe (including driving an inflatable boat and rescue jetski!).?

It has been incredible to be part of a community that has its ethos being around giving back and helping the local community with South Curl Curl SLS Club having members as young as 6 and as old as late 90’s!?

Over a number of years, we volunteered to train Lifesavers and help them keep their skills current across a range of Nationally Recognised Courses including:? Bronze Medallion, Surf Rescue Certificate, First Aid, CPR, and Advanced Resuscitation.? To assist further we became Assessors of the National Training Courses to assess and certify SLS members in the required awards.?

In the recent Sydney Northern Beaches SLS Awards evening I was recognised with the 2024 Assessor of the Year Award.? This was in recognition of the large number of assessments and contributions I was involved in over the season.? It was an honour to be recognised with the other nominees from the 21 clubs across the branch.

I often write about how important it is for leaders to recognise their people for the commitment and efforts that they contribute.? The positive cultures that these leaders create provide them with a competitive advantage to other ‘old school leaders’ that just expect their people to do work because they are being paid. The positive leaders have staff engagement and commitment that is noticeable.

As someone who received recognition, it is something that does make a difference.? The hours and time put in feel validated and recognised.? No wonder Surf Life Saving Australia has continued to grow and grow and continue to make one of the biggest positive differences to its members, the community and the country.?

So, a gentle reminder to the leaders out there, when was the last time you recognised your people?? What could you do to let them know that they are important to you?
