Scoring the Game Winner

Scoring the Game Winner

“You always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky

So, who is this Wayne Gretzky guy? Well, the facts are he:

  • Is the leading scorer in the history of the National hockey League (NHL)
  • Tallied more goals and assists than any other player
  • Is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season – a feat he accomplished four times
  • Tallied over 100 points in 16 professional seasons, 14 of them consecutively
  • Continues to hold 60 NHL records at the time of his retirement.

Yes, Wayne Gretzky was an impressive hockey player. As an athlete, he was gifted, there is little doubt. However, he was known for working hard, playing hard and being a team player like no other.

I could go on and on about Wayne Gretzky, the zen of hockey and hockey as a metaphor for life. Suffice it to say, after all is said and done, you win hockey games putting pucks in the net. The only way to put pucks in the net is to fire lots of them at the net. The more shots you take, the more goals you will score. You don’t make excuses for not taking the shot. You just do whatever you can to get a shot on goal. As I have been told since I was a kid, “Just get pucks at the net, Tommy, and good things will happen.”

So there you have it. When it gets down to it, you need to take more shots to score more goals. How do you keep score? What pucks do you shoot at the net and how can you take more shots?

Give this some thought and I am pretty sure that there is some Serious Shift in there somewhere.
