“I’ve always struggled with the concept of enough.?
In part, that’s just the way I am. Always worried if I’m doing enough to help, what would be enough to make the people around me happy, if there is ever enough when it comes to adding new books to my library.?
Imagine my surprise when I realized, shortly after the birth of my son, that everything I was - devoted parent and spouse, dependable employee, board game enthusiast and amateur chef - still wasn’t enough. I’d never been entirely satisfied in my own skin, but I had always blamed discomfort with gender norms and redoubled my efforts to claim space. But at last, it wasn’t enough - for me - to be my assigned gender any more, so I finally admitted that I was transgender. After coming to terms with myself, I told my spouse, and then the people around me.

The process took years, and is still ongoing. Shedding the spiritual weight of being “womanly” was a revelation that helped me feel more comfortable, even before I’d taken any steps to present as my preferred gender. However, now I had new worries. Was I safe enough in my workplace to be myself? Even more important - was I trans enough to claim the identity publicly??
In retrospect I have to laugh. Of course I was trans enough! There’s no one mold that transgender people fit into - you can be fat, thin, young, old, or middle aged, you can have had children or never want to have anything to do with them. I’m still married to the man who thought he married a woman, and I still remember my son telling his friends “my mommy is a boy!” with a big smile on his face.?
I am enough, and I’m proud to be visible and vocal about who I am. You, too, are enough - whether you are worrying about your job, or your personal life, or even your own identity. To my LGBTQ+ family around the world, whatever your situation may be, I send you love and support and wish you all the best.”?
