SCIP DATABASE EXTENSION: FROM 7 NOVEMBER 2022 MANDATORY ALSO FOR EEA COUNTRIES.

SCIP is the EU public database of products /articles that contains Substances of very hight concern (SVHCs).

The acronymous SCIP stands for Substances of Concern In Products and the database is established under the Waste Framework Directive (WFD).

In the EU countries the SCIP database is mandatory from 5 January 2021, and it involves articles containing Substances of very hight concern SVHCs, that are on the Candidate list in a concentration above 0.1% weight by weight (w/w) and are placed in EU market.

The companies that supplying these articles must submit information to ECHA, through SCIP database. The SCIP database permits the tracking of dangerous chemicals in products.

Thanks to the SCIP database the consumers can be more informed about these articles, and they can make conscious purchasing choices, while the waste operators are helped to further develop the re-use of articles and the recycling of materials.

The importance of this database is shown by numbers: from 5 January 2021 this procedure has involved over 8 600 companies across the EU and 8.7 million searchable article notifications are being submitted.

To make the market safer and to promote the recycling in Europe, from the 7 November the duty of SCIP will be extended also for the countries of European Economic Area (EEA), so it will also extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

This extension is an amendment to the Waste Framework Directive (WFD) which has been incorporated into the EEA Agreement.
