Regular sessions of Acupuncture are effective in treating Parkinson Disease and alleviating its accompanying symptoms.
Parkinson disease is a common chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease common among people above 60 years old. It is caused by the loss of nerve cells that produce the hormone dopamine and the presentation of dysfunctions in movements and motor functions such as shaking, tremors in hands, arms, legs, jaw or head, unstable posture, muscle stiffness, difficulty swallowing, chewing and speaking, urinary problems, constipation, skin problems, depression and other emotional changes.
The conventional treatment for Parkinson disease is the pharmaceutical drug called levodopa which claims to help with the motor symptoms of the disease. However use of levodopa for long periods of time can result in the drop in efficacy of the drug and side effects such as dizziness, loss of appetite, dry mouth, forgetfulness and confusion.
Acupuncture is commonly used as a natural therapy for Parkinson disease. Many science papers have shown that acupuncture can help to improve clinical symptoms such as tremors, aid patients in decreasing the use of the western medications for Parkinson disease, decrease in the side effects of the antiparkinsonian drugs, improve daily life quality and even delay the progression of the disease.
