Is scientific engagement worth the effort?

Is scientific engagement worth the effort?

Scientific engagement is time-consuming and increasingly difficult to implement in a medicine focused on efficiency and cost pressure. Especially if you work in a non-university structure, as I do, there is no compensation for it other than praise, and the work takes place exclusively in your free time. When you look at the statistics of your scientific life's work, you may be proud, but then ask yourself: was it worth the effort?

What does your family say about it, to whom you could perhaps have devoted this time? What does your wallet say about it, which could perhaps have been filled with revenue-generating treatments during this time??

What do you say about it? Is it worth the effort? For the scientific community? For the patients?

Looking forward to your comments and personal experiences on this!

Scientific engagement and sharing skills of doctors is very important! I invest my time and money in LEARNING HOSPITAL. It gives doctors exclusively the opportunity to share their knowledge in an economically viable way. This, to improve the quality of patient care. Wolfgang Zinser I do not differentiate between academic and non-academic institutions. If a surgeons goal is to get better, one has to evaluate his or her own results. Similar to sports, one cannot become an elite runner without timing and evaluating the runs. Most of the orthopaedic literature is not science per se anyway, it is just simple quality control. I think it is a shame that every factory has mandatory quality control mechanisms but for some reason this does not exist in our health care system. National registries and medical clinical research should be mandatory. In todays system research is not valued, however it is the only way how medicine can advance for the benefit of our patients. So is it worth it? For me, absolutely! It is the only way I would want and could work anyway.
