Yesterday, thousands of people marched for science in more than 500 cities all over the world to defend the scientific method, rationality, experimentation and critical thinking against opinion, preconceived ideas, magical thinking, obscurantism, fake news and "alternative facts". Assertions that have not been or cannot be checked are not facts.

Truth is an unreachable, asymptotic ideal but slowly approaching it through a patient and honest confrontation between models and facts is the only operative way to progress.

Moreover, building up knowledge using the scientific method is a universal endeavour which overcomes borders, and therefore scientists are also peacemakers.
