Execution: Feeling Anger
A person experiencing physical conditions of increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and increased levels of adrenaline and norepinephrine, is most likely experiencing anger – if you are also experiencing the following emotions:
- contempt, when you are most likely experiencing disgust, besides anger
- aggressiveness, when you are expecting and angry
- envy, when you are most likely experiencing sadness together with anger
- pride, when you are enjoying anger
- outrage, when you are unpleasantly surprised and experiencing anger
- dominance, when you are angry with someone you are attracted to
An angry person tends to anticipate other events that might cause anger. Expression of anger is found in facial expressions, body language, and at times public acts of aggression. Psychological physical responses to look out for anger, are:
- Perspiration – sweating
- Horripilation – goose bumps, bristling of hair on skin
- Change of voice – broken and choking voice
- Trembling – throbbing and shaking
- Change of color – changing color of face and by pressure on the pulse and weakness of the limbs
Displays of anger can be used as a manipulation strategy for social influence. Anger can potentially mobilize psychological resources and boost determination toward correction of wrong behaviors, promotion of social justice, communication of negative sentiment, and redress of grievances. It can also facilitate patience. In contrast, anger can be destructive when it does not find its appropriate outlet in expression. Depending on its intensity it is classified as below:
- Annoyance – mild anger
- Anger
- Rage – intense anger
Anger is protective mechanism to cover up fear
Feelings of anger and fear cannot be experienced at the same time.
1. Contempt – how to know if feeling anger or disgust?
Contempt is an emotion – emotions are fleeting while feelings linger. When you experience contempt, you'll also experience other emotions – all of them fleeting. To assess if you are feeling angry, you need to be conscious of other emotions you are experiencing – other than contempt. Are these other emotions also making you angry – are you experiencing some of the other 5 emotions listed above?
Please look out for 5 psychological expressions listed above, in support of feeling of anger as opposed to disgust. Characteristic facial expressions in disgust are: slightly narrowed brows, a curled upper lip, wrinkling of the nose and visible protrusions of the tongue.
Emotions are fleeting — feelings they provoke persist and grow over lifetime
2. Is it possible to have contempt but not anger?
Absolutely yes! Contempt is an emotion – and, emotions are fleeting. Unless there are other emotions – some of the remaining 5 emotions listed above, coming in and going out again and again, you'll not experience anger.
3. How to ensure experiencing anger?
Humor is leveraged when something is wrong or unsettling, or threatening, but simultaneously seems okay, acceptable or safe. Together with anger mix humor to exude sense of pride. When you want to experience anger with those whom you are attracted to, practice behavior of dominance. When you are jealous, you'll be angry and sad at the same time.
Depending on situation, design your communication using these various emotions
