The Science of Engagement
Self-Determination Theory Applied to a Team

The Science of Engagement

Engagement statistics are dismal, everywhere I look.

The latest Gallup poll shows that "employees in the U.S. continued to feel more detached from their employers, with?less clear expectations, lower levels of satisfaction with their organization, and less connection to its mission or purpose than they did four years ago."

Most frightening to me is this insight from their report:

"They are also less likely to feel someone at work cares about them as a person."

Richard M Ryan, Ed Deci, and possibly more than 10,000 researchers (according to ChatGPT's assessment of Google Scholar, PubMed, PsycINFO, and more) have been feverishly studying intrinsic motivation since the early 1970s and they have some pointers for us.

>> When a team is aligned, they have relatedness-oriented goals, and people feel cared for. They demonstrate connectedness and caring for the people they serve and work with.

>> When a team is confident, they have demonstrated competence and feel that their skills are meaningful. They know where to experiment and are encouraged to learn.

>> When a team is committed, they demonstrate volition and feel a sense of autonomy and control in their jobs. There is structure and they know where to place their creativity.

If you want an engaged team, study this science and apply it.

I was thinking about your leaders today and our workshop a few years ago and thought they might appreciate this. I'd love your thoughts. Brad Greer, Wade Clowes, and Mark Balsiger

Engagement forced leads to all sorts of problems. Engagement from within creates meaningful opportunities and teams that thrive.

Sean, the CEO and the leadership team set the standard for engagement My leadership standard as a CEO was love your people and get out of their way. Really and truly loving your people is essential to getting them to feel appreciated and engaged I treat my CEOs in my vistage group exactly the same way as I treated my employees

So true Sean Flaherty, and then teams naturally take ownership of their role. As a result leaders have to do less work keeping their people accountable. I really vibe with your work.
