Science for Development
Science Summit 2025
Supporting science for the SDGs, building shared capacity for research collaboration, insuring access to data for all
The science for development idea has been around for some time.
Science for development focuses on building local scientific capacity by investing in education, training, and research infrastructure. This should empower individuals and institutions in developing countries to generate and apply scientific knowledge to address their specific challenges. But there are many barriers to this: the lack of skills, funding and political leadership in those less developed nations that need to be part of global science capacity. Science infrastructures need many years of planning and joined-up thinking among various stakeholders. This is difficult to achieve and maintain.
It involves the transfer of appropriate technologies from developed to developing countries to bridge the technological gap. This enables developing nations to adopt and adapt existing scientific advancements for their local contexts, leading to improved productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness.
Science for development emphasizes the development and implementation of sustainable solutions that consider environmental, social, and economic factors. It aims to address the immediate needs of communities while ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience.
Science for development thrives on collaboration among various stakeholders, including scientists, policymakers, communities, and international organizations. Partnerships facilitate knowledge exchange, resource sharing, and collective action to tackle complex development challenges.
It highlights the importance of evidence-based policy formulation and integration of scientific knowledge into development agendas. Science for development advocates for policies that are informed by robust research, data-driven analysis, and evaluation of potential impacts
