The textbook "The Science of College Success: Unlocking Your Resilient Brain" is set to debut in college and university classrooms in 2025. This groundbreaking book aims to transform how we approach student success, equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive academically and in their careers and personal lives. The book explores the application of neuroscience and cutting-edge research to improve mental performance by sharpening cognitive skills, which can enhance focus and concentration, memory, and learning capabilities.
Moving beyond traditional first-year experience (FYE) and college success textbooks, this book integrates the latest findings from various disciplines, including neuroscience, behavioral sciences, cognitive psychology, educational psychology, positive psychology, complexity theory, medical sciences, nutritional science, exercise science, attachment theory, relational studies, linguistics, and social sciences.
It uniquely positions itself as the only first-year experience/college success textbook that employs evidence-based methods while steering clear of debunked theories that can hinder rather than help optimize learning and memory (e.g., learning styles; American Psychological Association, 2019; American Psychological Association, 2014; Coffield et al., 2004; Kirschner, 2017; Polk, 2018; Rogowsky et al., 2014; Yale University, n.d.). This focus of the book aims to enhance resilience and boost academic performance using proven methods.

Brain-Based and Meta-Learning: Students will explore the fascinating intricacies of the human brain, enabling them to understand its functions. This knowledge will provide valuable insights into improving their learning strategies and enhancing their cognitive skills, ultimately leading to greater academic achievement. The curriculum delves into meta-learning, teaching students techniques rooted in neuroscience that enable them to study more effectively and efficiently. Students will uncover proven learning strategies to help them accelerate their learning process, improve their cognitive skills, enhance their reading skills, and improve their memory.
Memory Training: Students will participate in comprehensive memory training designed to increase their confidence in memorizing technical terms they will encounter in various college-level courses, including those in STEM, medical, and other fields that require this skill. Students will learn and practice the most effective techniques for memorizing vocabulary and technical terms while training their memory quickly, absorbing the most important ideas from textbooks or lectures. Additionally, they'll dive into advanced skills, such as alphanumeric methods, to help them easily recall complex formulas, math equations, and numbers. Mindfulness: This practice fosters a mental state geared toward academic success while enhancing students' mental and physical health. Students will cultivate the ability to be fully engaged and aware of their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations during their studies. This practice can enhance focus and concentration while also aiding in stress management and overall cognitive function, ultimately boosting academic performance. Students will discover techniques to boost their focus and attention, leading to improved mental clarity and academic performance. In essence, it encourages active involvement in the learning journey, free from distractions of worry or anxiety, which helps students absorb information more effectively.
Positive Psychology: Students will discover how to apply the principles of positive psychology in a school environment. This approach is designed to enhance their well-being by emphasizing their strengths, resilience, and positive emotions instead of merely focusing on challenges or weaknesses. The ultimate aim is to help students boost academic performance, mental health, and overall happiness within the learning space.
