Science assumes us to be mechanical.?
We are not robots, we are magic. We need the mystical and spiritual parts to be fed.??
I am listening to a completely science-based speaker about wellness and well-being and find myself saying “Yes! Yes! Yes! This makes such perfect sense.” Until I start saying “Yes, but…”??
As he continues, I feel inside me “If this is all, we are nothing less than robots and purely mechanical. We follow a protocol without respect to nourishing how we came into being. Something essential to LIFE is missing.”?
I can see someone saying, “I did everything I was supposed to, but I’m still not happy.”??
Have you ever eaten just one thing? Grilled chicken breast or just kale, for example. I mean plain. No skin or oil or anything on the chicken. No dressing or anything on the kale. Your body knows you are missing other essential nutrients and your organism satisfied. Yes, there is food in your belly, but you hunger still.??
This is how I feel about wellness and well-being. To exclude components of spiritual well-being or alternative methods for healing and better yet, being pro-active to achieve your personal version of health (mind, body, and spirit) lack an essential, foundational piece to the make-up of our BE-ing.?
Over the years, media (backed by science and driven by consumerism, industry, etc., basically everyone with something to gain from perpetuating a ‘right way’ or ‘The way’ to be [insert healthy, happy, successful]) drove us to believe what they say and that be the [insert truth, solution, right way, etc.].?
We all have learned that skinny and fad diets are not the answer to health or happiness for that matter. The media back in the day morphed our self-image causing complicated body dysmorphia, confidence, and self-esteem issues. Losing or gaining weight cannot heal these issues or traumas. Our life is not ‘healthy’ in correlation to weight.??
We know better and the perfect body image is not a type, but what feels good for you. Thank you to the many voices who speak up and are honest and real to overcome the old standards, beliefs, and lies. (Thank you media and advertisers for finally being who you should have been all along with efforts to show diversity and inclusion .... you're getting there).??
The media and western medicine taught us that a ‘perfect weight’ translates to health, vitality, and wellness. We now know this is not 100% true, not for the physical self, and even more untrue for the emotional and mental self.?
My point here is that health and wellness and most importantly well-being, is a balance and feeding all the parts of us as beings, not as a robot.??
What if we eliminated water from our diet? Do we get enough hydration from our foods for us to function and survive? Possibly. Depends on what you eat. It is much more likely you would get dehydrated and over time that would lead to a breakdown in bodily functions and organ failure and eventually death, without intervention.??
If we only focus on the parts of us that we can see measurable, visible, and measurable emotional results on through science alone, based on a specific parameter and set of controls and variables, we are missing key ingredients to well-being.??
Collective consciousness, energy, prayer, alternative healing methods are all very real and contribute to our individual well-being and even greater, our evolution and the elevation of humanity.?
Am I making sense??

For example, we need connections. Healthy connections and gathering with friends, loved ones, peers, community, and those who we share commonalities with, stretch us to growth, feel safe in the presence of expressing ourselves in, celebrating with, and us celebrating with them. Being the witness to someone speaking their truth, opening a discussion that brings about solutions, positive change, … allowing and engaging in self-expression. The outcomes of us being heard, seen, and valued as well as contributing to something bigger, being compassionate, and caring, have undeniable, essential well-being value. I believe this (and hope) you will agree on this with me. It is what makes us human.?
While I am a huge proponent and advocate for science and science based, let us not forget, we as humans, in human form, are here by way of magic.??
Human science can theorize how we got here, what made us, and more, but we will never know until we go back to wherever … and perhaps not even then.??
We need essentials to survive. Science can help us to understand more about our organism and prove outcomes through data.??
Let us not forget the things that data cannot measure. How big is love? How happy must we be to say we live a blessed and fulfilling life? How can we measure gratitude in a foolproof way and predict outcomes based on that???
These are personal and individualized. By asking questions of ourselves in truth, honesty, and compassion, can we decide.??
Where we have come from and what we desire to achieve, and experience is personal.?Well-being is not a one size fits all and is completely different for everyone. Someone may find the greatest joy in a relationship while someone else who has just exited a traumatic relationship fids joy and freedom on their own.?
Speaking for myself, is an 80/20 ratio and elixir for my personal well-being. Eighty percent of my well-being is science-based, measurable, and mechanical (if you will) in application and incorporation and 20% of my lifestyle and practices are spiritual, magical, mystical, and for myself, must be part of my routine to feel complete and in harmony.??
I do rely on my gut and how I feel about something. I am glad I am not alone in this mystical method of decision making. People who I know, love, and trust who have satisfied their personal level of success and who would qualify to social standards of success, also ‘feel into’ their decisions and what is right for them. ?
The right way to live, express, navigate life is not and cannot be solely based on science and data. To that end, the words, ‘right,’ ‘best,’ and ‘only’ I caution you to be aware of and seek inquiry to. Science loves these terms.?
Speaking for myself, my emotional and mental health needs to be nurtured, fed, and cared for to experience well-being.
Maybe this was all triggered today as only science-based 'solutions' were offered up. For all I stand for and all I do, I know there is something bigger and more to us, and those parts have needs. Perhaps I sound scattered or maybe even like a wingnut .... Do I?
In closing, we are not machines. We are magic. Seek what is missing and only you will know what is and what you need to feed your mind, body, and soul.?
Thanks for reading. This is just my own opinion.??

2 年Thanks for this conversation Anna Pereira Chairwoman Soul Ventures. We need to balance the rational mind, brain in our head view of the world (cephalic brain) with our gut wisdom (enteric brain), and heart wisdom (cardiac brain) to respond to the rapid pace of change that's required today. When science combines all three brains, we get a more accurate picture of reality than simply relying on one set of criteria. I expect that the scientific method will eventually prove what we empaths and creatives feel in our hearts and guts but can't always express rationally.

2 年Thank you Anna Pereira Chairwoman Soul Ventures for so eloquently expressing what so many of us believe to be true. Although science can make a big contribution in supporting us with our well-being, we must never forget that it can never replace the well being we experience through our authentic and loving connections with ourselves and with others. ??

2 年Wellness has always been a balance of all three components: Mind-Body-Spirit, and I suspect "science" is part of it as much as "spirituality" is.
I help people be happier through my books, coaching, speaking, and training sessions.
2 年Anna, you are definitely not a wingnut in my book! I totally agree with you that we are not robots and there is a part of us that is magic. This world would be in much better shape if everyone would tune into their own magic. As a whole, I feel we are moving in the right direction but have so very, very far to go. But with you, the Wellness Universe along with other movements, we are making progress. Thank you for making this world a better place.
