The Science of Affirmations

Sometimes it feels as though the world is just beating you down.?Or you don’t feel up to your best that day.

Have you ever tried positive self-affirmations?

Affirmations offer the chance for us all to focus on the positives in ourselves, and the greater impact we are making in the moment.

Have you ever told yourself, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can”??Once you stopped imagining that little engine, you probably got the energy to get up and try to climb that hill.?Well, guess what?!?You just told yourself and affirmation.

Self-affirmation should be rooted in the present.?It should rarely look in the past, as that could trigger thoughts of negativity in remembering areas that you may not have performed to your best abilities.

In a 2012 article on Association for Psychological Science , provided a summary of neurophysiological study about how the brain responds to self-affirmations opposed to non-affirmations.

“The researchers speculate that participants who were self-affirmed were more receptive to errors which allowed them to better correct for their mistakes.”

That ability to overcome errors, and failures allows us to continue forward to reach the goals we have set for ourselves.?

According to a recent Washington Post article there are several things to keep in mind when going through your daily affirmations.

>>Prioritize developing a “multidimensional life.”<<

It is so important to develop multiple passions, and relationships with family, friends, and work.?This allows you to not be knocked completely down if one thing doesn’t go your way.?It also, give you more positives to draw on in your affirmations.

>>Identify authentic affirmations.<<

Aligning what you say with who you are is vital to making sure your affirmations will connect with yourself on a level that will be more likely to ensure success.?It is recommended that you can write down your affirmations, and then rate them on a scale of 0-100, based on believability.?Anything below a 50 won’t serve you and should be discarded.

>>Build a daily habit that relates to affirmation.<<

Affirmations that do not drive action will never come true or work.?You can tell yourself that you are going to be rich until you are blue in the face, but unless you take the steps necessary to make it happen, it never will.?Like anything great, affirmations and the actions to make them a reality take work.

As you can see, science backs the benefits of positive self-affirmations.?It is something that people have been doing for many generations and will continue to.?No longer are we relegated to the satirical world of the Stuart Smalley’s, affirmations are a real tool that can help you get over that hurdle, make that first step, seize your future.

The second point was a big one for me. If it doesn't feel authentic, then affirmations become just words—more wishful thinking than acknowledging what I already know to be true.
