Schooling, Education, Skilling and Employment

Schooling, Education, Skilling and Employment

As we navigate the world of education, there is often confusion and misunderstanding around the terms education, schooling, skilling, and employment. To clarify these concepts, we turn to the wisdom of educationists, social scientists, teachers, and education think tanks from around the world.

Education is a broad term that encompasses all learning experiences, formal and informal, throughout our lives. As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Education goes beyond just the classroom and includes learning from our families, communities, and life experiences.

Schooling, on the other hand, is a more specific form of education that takes place in a structured environment, such as a school or university. However, as Sir Ken Robinson famously stated, "Schools are not broken. They are obsolete." We must continue to innovate and transform the way we approach schooling to ensure that it meets the needs of our ever-changing world.

Skilling refers to developing specific skills and abilities that are necessary for certain careers or industries. Skilling often takes place outside of formal education institutions, such as through vocational training or apprenticeships. However, as educationist Sir John Daniel reminds us, "Skilling without education is a recipe for social injustice."

Employment is the end goal of much of our education and skilling, but it is important to remember that it is not the only goal. As educationist Sir Ken Robinson noted, "The purpose of education is not to get a job, but to create a life." Education and skilling should also equip us with the knowledge, skills, and values to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.

Despite these distinctions, there are often misunderstandings and miscommunications among parents, students, leaders, industries, and media. For example, there can be a belief that education is only valuable if it leads to immediate employment or that schooling is the only path to success. It is essential that we continue to have conversations and engage in dialogue to break down these misconceptions and promote a more holistic and inclusive approach to education.

As we move forward, let us remember the words of educationist Paulo Freire: "Education does not transform the world. Education changes people. People change the world." Let us work together to create a world where education, schooling, skilling, and employment are not separate entities, but rather interconnected and meaningful parts of a rich and fulfilling life.

In closing, I leave you with a great quotation on understanding, misunderstanding, and refusing to understand by philosopher Voltaire: "Prejudices are what fools use for reason. Understanding is what wise men and women use to see the truth. Refusing to understand is what the ignorant and closed-minded do to hold onto their prejudices." Let us strive to understand, learn, and grow together.
