A SCHOOL UNDER A METRO BRIDGE

A SCHOOL UNDER A METRO BRIDGE

Rajesh Kumar Sharma was forced to abandon his education due to extreme financial difficulties. Today, he has assumed the role of a teacher for 39 impoverished children, who currently attend his school in Delhi. A school that Rajesh runs from underneath a DMRC bridge. A torn rug to sit on, a metro bridge for a roof, a patch of wall painted black for a blackboard.  So far, Sharma has taught about a 140 students and nearly half of them have been able to move on to government schools. This may look like a scene out of a Hindi movie but is the everyday reality of 39 children from villages near the Yamuna bank. Five days a week, he takes out two hours to teach when his younger brother replaces him at his general store in Shakarpur. His students are children of labourers, rickshaw-pullers and farm workers.
