School is in Session at Foothills

One of the largest school districts in Northern Colorado is settling into a new outpost: the Foothills shopping center in Fort Collins

When Poudre School District was in need of a space for a new Future Ready Center, they didn't expect to find that space in a shopping mall.

The idea was to create a resource center for all the college and career-ready programs happening across the district; a community hub and a centrally-located, large-scale meeting space that is front-facing to the community in the city of Fort Collins. However, the trouble was finding a spot in town that could accommodate those goals--where could they be public facing, easily found, and have room for large-scale events?

The answer was Foothills, a central point in midtown and a familiar hub of retail since the 1970s. These days, Foothills is more than just a "mall"--it's also a multifunctional community gathering place, where summer concerts, winter farmers markets, and city-wide celebrations are hosted. In short, it was easy to find, well-known to the public, and roomy enough to host the largest of events--the perfect home for the Future Ready Center.

So in September of last year, The Future Ready Center moved into a vacant storefront at Foothills. Now, they are fully settled and kicking off a series of large events this summer, including hiring fairs, orientations, graduation celebrations, and more.

Many of these events (including Career and Technical Education Craft Fairs and hiring fairs) rely on community partnership to assist in the instruction of a trade or business practices, but also to act as customers as they engage with student-made mock storefronts or request services. The result is invaluable real-world experience for students that supports community engagement and involvement.
