School girl effect…..

As you may know from watching my free workshop “How to Make a Thousand Bucks in a Weekend”, I have studied human response for decades.?

What happens when…

  • Someone enters a room (in person or virtual)
  • Two people make eye contact (or become aware of each other’s mutual existence for the first time)
  • You have something you want to share (an idea, an offer, a compliment ) but you aren’t quite sure how to broach the subject

As we make connections...

Business - your boss - your colleague - your potential customer?

Personal -? your spouse - your neighbor - your child

Leadership - the basketball court - the classroom - the boardroom

...it’s kinda like watching a school girl (and, yes, this applies whether or not you’re a girl ;-) )?

Cause…

It’s not about gender

It’s not about how old you are?

It’s not even about how experienced or accomplished you are?

Human interaction always seems to have those first few millisecond of AWKWARDNESS

  • Thousands of thoughts racing
  • Doubts?
  • Ideas
  • Pictures
  • Scenarios that play out in your minds eye?

It can be daunting.

I call it The School Girl Effect

This “School girl effect” can be Paralyzing!?

It can stop you from saying anything?

Stop you from taking action

Make you look and feel like a fumbling bumbling foolish little school girl

Are you following along?

Maybe your stomach hurts just recalling this feeling?

If you’ve had to have this feeling once it will leave a mark, a SCAR on your heart and mind…

And that feeling can strike at the worst moment

Let me give you an example, this past week one of my clients had a schoolgirl moment.

First let me paint a picture… because even women who have all the clout, experience and strength in other scenarios can still fall prey to this unwanted “schoolgirl effect”.

For years, this client had an executive level role at a global company — she left (like many of us — she had a personal wake up call one day and decided to change the trajectory of her life (And then she did)!

She runs a successful consulting business commanding $25,000 and up consulting fees for 30, 60, 90 days with brands that would make you drool.

She has a great network that she’s built up over the years and they all LOVE HER (and have told her as much by the recommendations they leave on Linkedin and the referrals she regularly receives.

So HOW COULD this amazing, accomplished person POSSIBLY feel like a schoolgirl? Because she’s HUMAN.

This past week she was speaking at a conference>

She and I had a HUDDLE beforehand, reviewing her slides, her CTA and what she could do during her session to genuinely connect with at least 5 potential leads (especially meaningful activities for when she was in the speakers GREEN ROOM)

She was ready.

ALL SET.

While she was at the conference? -? I get a frantic text “The CEO of __(If I said the brand you would know it but I never reveal my clients leads)__ is sitting next to me.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Schoolgirl moment!

Have you ever gotten PROXIMITY to someone but were unsure about what to do or say NEXT to make this a meaningful connection (and set yourself up to continue the conversation)??

That’s what I do!!

Let me break down for you what I walked her through:

1. Ask yourself - will you ever have MORE proximity to this person than RIGHT NOW?? NO?

Then NOW is the time.

2. Ask yourself - why NOT? Why NOT start a conversation and ask a few questions? Why NOT invite him to be a guest on your show?

3. Ask yourself - In one year - will it matter even if this is an utter disaster? NOPE.

So don’t hold back, don’t hesitate!
