School dropout: its causes and how to get out of it?

1.3 million is the number of students (high school and university included) who dropped out of school in 2020-2021 according to a study by OpinionWay. Although certain factors are more conducive to this phenomenon, the pandemic has only made things worse.?

A phenomenon that started back long before the pandemic?

Since the 1990s, the term “school dropout” has been heard more and more. It is defined by a more or less long decadence that a student will experience during his or her studies, sometimes to the point of stopping the education altogether. This process goes through repeated absences, bad grades, disruptive behavior for others…?

But what are the causes of a school dropout??

There are three factors that explain it: the individual, family and school context. Indeed, concerning the student himself, at this period of life, mental health is often neglected. Learning difficulties are not resolved and an internalization is created in the face of failures. The family context (divorce, lack of support, poorly educated parents, conflictual relationships…) is important. The consequences are not to be taken lightly if this context is not healthy. Let us also note that the social class from which the student comes is very often the major stake in his success. The INSEE (French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies) stresses that the children of executive parents are much more likely to succeed than those from working-class backgrounds. The school climate also plays an important role. There is a very strong categorization in the classes concerning “good” and “bad” students, which often leads to persecution. The same is true for schools with a good or bad reputation, which does nothing to improve the situation of students in difficulty.?

How does the pandemic combine these three factors?

The COVID-19 crisis only made things worse. While some students were thrilled with distance learning, others dropped out of school altogether (lack of motivation, social skills, support…). All schools and teachers had to adapt to the digitalization of courses. This has been very complex for most of them – both students and teachers – which has led to 5 to 8% of students dropping out of school (absenteeism, no internet connection or computer…) for this period only according to the French Minister of Education. This is a problem that many schools are noticing more and more: the school is struggling with digitalization while technology is evolving very quickly. A gap is created which leads to a lack of focus and boredom with the different curricula of secondary education.?

How can Studeo stand against this??

The creation of start-ups is increasing. This is resulting in tutoring platforms that are available for many curricula. According to a study by Businesscoot, the tutoring market is currently growing, with more than one million students using such platforms in 2020 in France. Studeo is one of the new start-ups that are developing and that wish to democratize excellent tutoring (here in math). Thanks to the experience of the best private teachers. They have understood the effective method to work and allow their students to learn in the long term: breaking down chapters into sub-sections of about 20 minutes, timing of exercises to prepare for exams, regular reminders through flashcards. The best part is that it can be used at any time of the day so there is no pressure.?

However, even though the number of registrations has quintupled since the pandemic, students who use this type of platform most often do so when they are revising for their exams.?
