School Closures... Kids at Home?
A non-exhaustive list that might help parents and carers affected by school closures due to coronavirus. Without warranty but these are a compilation of useful tools I’ve used, explored or discovered on recommendations from educators.
Fantastic website of live lessons... BBC Teach is free. The website is home to thousands of free curriculum-mapped videos, arranged by age-group and subject.
Note - Minecraft is a paid for app but if you have it already: Minecraft is making its educational worlds available free, to help pupils no longer able to attend school because of the coronavirus pandemic. The 12 digital lessons will be available to download until the end of June.
Carol Vorderman's maths lessons for kids. They will be making The Maths Factor FREE for everyone (usually about £2 per week) to support children's’ continued learning at home for the duration of the UK Schools closure period.
BrainPOP offers animated films on topics in maths, science and English for curious learners with free access during school closures.
Sir Linkalot takes the usual spelling games for kids, and gives them a fantastic twist. Over a third of 11-year-old children don't meet literacy test standards. It has the backing of lexicographer Susie Dent and has just announced that for the duration of the coronavirus outbreak it will be available free to parents and schools.
20 March, Audible announced the launch of Audible Stories, a new service through which the company will be providing free audiobooks for small children and teens for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic. "For as long as schools are closed, we're open,".
Especially good for maths and computing for all ages but other subjects at Secondary level. Note this uses the USA grade system but it's mostly common material.
Use BBC Bitesize to help with homework, revision and learning. Find free videos, step-by-step guides, activities and quizzes by level and subject. Also available as an app.
This site no longer updated but there's a wealth of resources including specific curriculum material still available.
Five-minute videos used to start the day, take a break, or spark curiosity, with prompts like “Can turtles live outside their shells?” and “Why are rubies red?” Doug is a former school teacher who guides questions, uses visuals, and asks questions.
Project Gutenberg - Free eBooks
Project Gutenberg is a library of over 60,000 free eBooks. Choose among free epub and Kindle eBooks, download them or read them online.
GoNoodle engages kids with movement and mindfulness videos created by child development experts. Available for free at school, home, and everywhere kids are!
One of personal favourite MOOC sites. Free to access 100s of courses. Payment is only required to upgrade if you need a certificate to verify your completion of a course (own account from age 14+ but younger learners can use a parent account).
Wonderopolis is a place where natural curiosity and imagination lead to exploration and discovery in learners of all ages. A US oriented site but nevertheless some great content. Each day, they pose an intriguing question—the Wonder of the Day—and explore it in a variety of ways.
A homework and revision platform for those revising at GCSE or A level. A huge amount of free revision content. Paid access to higher level material.
The home of free learning from The Open University… 60 second tasters through to 24 hour courses… mainly targeted at adults but suitable for young adults and students.
Blockly Games is a series of educational games that teach programming. It is designed for children who have not had prior experience with computer programming - fun and free.
TED-Ed is TED’s youth and education initiative. TED-Ed helps with ideas of teachers and students around the world. Contains hundreds of good quality animated lessons.
Find amazing facts about animals, science, history and geography, along with fun activities, competitions, games and more.
From the Woodland Trust… some ‘out of the house activities’ - a lot of these that can be done in a garden.
Learn 30+ languages online with bite-size lessons based on science. Web and/or app based.
Mystery Science offers free ‘open-and-go’ lessons that inspire kids to love and engage with science.
Creative coding and computer programming using visuals – great on a tablet or touch device. My kids love this!

A US YouTube channel with video courses covering Astronomy to History and Anatomy & Physiology USA high school curriculum topics but still useful content.
A US Youtube channel for younger kids that contains a bi-weekly show from the producers of Crash Course. Its USA gradeschool science but still very relevant in the UK. They look at Earth, Habitats, Space, Chemical Reactions, Engineering, and much more.
CREST is a scheme that inspires young people to think and behave like scientists and engineers. Great awards scheme.
Want to make stuff? Tinkercad is a free, easy-to-use app for 3D design, electronics, and coding.
Engaging, curriculum-aligned math platform in USA grades, but good for UK Primary School age.
Classroom and teaching resources for English language learning.
Oxford Owl was created to support children’s learning both at home and at school. Great number of free resources for Primary age kids.
A Facebook page of family activities that you can do right now with your family, while you are stuck at home during the coronavirus situation.
Provides easy and fun art and crafts for kids of all ages.
Fun radio stories, poems, songs and listening activities for babies, toddlers and young children. Listen online or download the podcasts to take away.

Toy Theater is full of interactive online art, reading & math games for kids. Designed with the needs of kindergarten through third grade.
