School-Based Studies: Bridging Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at IOL – episode 1
Institute for Open Learning
IOL is the foremost, well-respected and largest private distance education institution in Namibia.
At the Institute for Open Learning (IOL), we recognise that becoming an effective educator requires more than just theoretical knowledge; it demands practical experience. That’s why School-Based Studies (SBS) are a core component of our teacher education qualifications. SBS provides students with the opportunity to apply the theory in real-world school settings, allowing them to develop the hands-on experience and confidence needed to succeed in the classroom.
School-Based Studies are structured teaching placements, where IOL students work directly with experienced mentors, including teachers, heads of departments, and even school principals. These placements typically range from 2 to 5 weeks, depending on the specific qualification and the education phase the student is training for. During this time, students take on the role of a teacher, planning, delivering, and assessing lessons while receiving ongoing constructive feedback from their mentors. The purpose of SBS is to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and classroom reality, while fostering professional growth and self-reflection.
Through SBS, IOL students are able to bring their academic learning to life. Whether it’s understanding child development, lesson planning, or classroom management, students have the chance to apply these concepts directly in their teaching practice. The hands-on experience gained during SBS helps solidify the theories learned during coursework, making the learning process more dynamic and impactful.?
Check out this video from one of our students as they share their experience during School-Based Studies, and see first-hand how SBS is shaping their journey to becoming an outstanding educator.
