Scholarship Recipient Bolsters ProLiteracy

Recalling a story from April 2020

An Alpha Delta Kappa Mini-Grant of $500 supported my attendance at the National ProLiteracy Conference San Diego in September 2019. Teachers, tutors, managers, board members and many others from across the U.S. gathered to lead change in the adult literacy field.

There were more than 100 presentations to choose from to explore how we can be more effective in our literacy services for adult learners.

A significant theme of the conference is reflected in the poster. There are 45,000,000 adults in the U.S. who have literacy skills below 3rd grade. Two-thirds of them are women. There were several awards given to women who are now successful in many ways. Amazing life stories!

As president of South Coast Literacy Council in southern Orange County (27 ESL centers serving 1,000 students), it was a true privilege to be a “learner” among so many who are dedicated to improving literacy in the United States. Thank you, Alpha Delta Kappa.

Do you have a passion in the volunteer or work world? Would funds help you fulfill the change needed? If so, you should consider applying for a Regional Mini-Scholarship.
