Schneider Electric Drives Real Estate Decarbonisation with Hong Kong Green Tech Challenge Partnership

The Hong Kong Green Tech Challenge - Green Building Edition is coming to an end. The journey of this inaugural challenge focused on deep, committed climate action has been a fruitful one, and would not have been possible without strategic partnerships with fellow pioneers invested in the mission.

Schneider Electric is a global industrial technology leader, and they bring world-class expertise in electrification, automation and digitisation to buildings, data centers, infrastructure, industries and homes.?

They are an ecosystem of 150,000 colleagues and have more than a million partners operating in over 100 countries, delivering AI-enabled IoT solutions with connected products, software and services via an integrated, end-to-end lifecycle approach.?

As a Strategic Partner to the Hong Kong Green Tech Challenge, Schneider Electric has been instrumental in benchmarking against industry best practices in the energy sector, as well as providing support to Green Tech Innovators with wider ecosystem networks.

Our Community Lead, ?? Fangqin Chuah (蔡枋芩) interviews Jonathan Chiu , President of 施耐德电气 Hong Kong, as he shares his thoughts on the Challenge and the decarbonisation landscape in the city.

To begin, could you share a bit about Schneider Electric's decarbonisation efforts and your role within it??

Hong Kong has set its sight on achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and we see so much potential in leveraging digital solutions to maximise the decarbonisation potential of the city’s 50,000 buildings – providing visibility and advanced insights into energy and carbon savings opportunities.?

I feel very privileged to be leading Schneider Electric’s efforts in this market. It’s not just about serving our customers. It’s also about collaborating across the entire ecosystem and community to bring our mission as the trusted partner in sustainability and efficiency to life.??

What motivated the company to become a Strategic Partner in the Hong Kong Green Tech Challenge? How do you see this initiative contributing to the long-term success and impact of the participating startups?

We’ve been involved in some really exciting, transformative projects in Hong Kong, and we’ve learnt a lot about building those collaborative partnerships that are so crucial to catalysing systemic change. One example is the deployment of our centralised, cloud-based energy management platform across 太古地产 ’ multi-site portfolio in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, which enables them to track energy and resource data, and use AI to generate actionable insights for improving operational performance and reducing energy use and expenditure.?

More recently, we’ve been working to introduce the latest microgrid technologies designed to enhance energy resilience and efficiency for various applications, including for EV charging infrastructures. These solutions integrate renewable energy sources, advanced battery energy storage and smart grids to optimise energy supply and consumption. Not only do they support local energy needs, but they also contribute to broader environmental goals by facilitating the transition to a low-carbon future.

That’s why we’re thrilled to partner up with the Hong Kong Green Tech Challenge – Green Building Edition. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to leverage our experience to support the next generation of green tech pioneers, and empower them to optimise and scale their innovative projects. Projects that can deliver real, tangible impact – not just for Hong Kong, but beyond. ?

What does the future hold for green tech innovation in Hong Kong? How can initiatives like this Challenge drive sustainable change?

Hong Kong is on an exciting journey to become smarter, more resilient and sustainable, with the Northern Metropolis acting as an excellent testbed for innovative green technologies. As we go through this transformation, it’s important to stay open-minded about emerging technologies like AI and machine learning.

Data is crucial for this journey, but gathering, managing and making sense of it is often challenging. For Schneider Electric, this is precisely where open, agnostic software platforms come in, alongside actionable insights, scalable solutions and expert partnerships.?

And as the green tech market continues to grow, finding ways to leverage Hong Kong’s unique strengths and getting everyone involved in building a cohesive ecosystem will be key to attracting and scaling sustainable innovations for the city’s future.
