Nov. 24: The banality of definitions
Rule of law is only as good as the rulers who make the law. Here’s what the Christian Union alliance (CDU/CSU), together the German republic’s largest and to date winningest party, is making of its desire to “combat antisemitism, terror, hatred, and hate speech” and “terminate residence and prevent naturalization of antisemitic foreigners.”
Nov. 12: Never let facts get in the way of framing
Did a Jewish woman really get booed at a Palestinian protest she was part of? Unclear. But German media will present the story they want, anyway.

Nov. 10: The tragic narcissism of collective trauma
In a better world, the response to collective trauma would be empathy and compassion for people from other groups suffering from a similar experience. Unfortunately, that is not our world. Instead, the trauma response is fear, which expresses itself as anger, revenge, and a self-centered demand for more attention. Fear is a feeling and, as such, legitimate. But fear is not fact. It compromises reason, which is the foundation of post-enlightenment modernity.
Nov. 4: Foreign policy is not for the people
German Officialdom is in lockstep solidarity with Israel. The German public, however, appears to have a more nuanced understanding of both the current carnage as well as their own history than most of their media and political institutions.
Oct. 25: The problem with "Staatsr?son"
The pillars of Germany, as a state, are international law and Israel as the Jewish state. When these are at odds, "reason of state" comes to the rescue.
