Scheduling a break is as important as scheduling meetings!

Hello and welcome back to my LinkedIn newsletter! I have just returned from a long holiday with my family, so in this edition of the newsletter, we will talk about ‘Taking a Break’.

Scheduling a break is as important as scheduling meetings!

Work is an important piece of your life and sometimes you give it all that you have. If you do it all the time, it may take a toll on your health and your ability to produce the best you can. It is important for you to take a break and rejuvenate yourself. Just like a weekend is great to make you ready for another great week, the longer breaks taken twice a year make you ready to produce your best! I took almost 3 weeks off to be with my family and travel together to the US. I now cherish the memories I have created and am thankful for those moments.

Taking a break does wonders! All of you might know this as senior folks but sometimes these simple pointers can remind you to take action with the knowledge you already have.

Time to think!

When you are busy with your day-to-day work, you tend to get lost in your routines and jump from task to task or from one meeting to the next! You generate a lot of ideas that you would like to explore more, but you postpone the exploration as the mind is not fully free. You do not even get time to discuss the ideas with like-minded people or even friends. A break frees you from all the routines and creates a lot of space for you to think, discuss, and explore! Many ideas come back to the mind when the mind is free. When you combine it with the “time-to-think”, you may end up with some great possibilities.

A time to relax!

Your reptilian brain is always active when you are at work. There is one challenge or the other! And you need to survive! This drives unique behaviours, and you end up sleeping less, staying in hyperactive mode a little longer, and living on the edge for a long time. Your body compromises on the routine relaxation and repair functions in favour of surviving the day! But no one can continue this forever. Your body needs your mind to relax and let it go on with the task of making us more fit. Sometimes, all you need is some days of extra sleep and relaxation! Two breaks a year is something that is really required. I always feel more energetic when I am back from the holidays and feel more optimistic and positive! The relaxation gives you the energy to go on “fighting” your daily battles at work.

Strengthen your ties with family & friends

No one can do it all on their own! Your families are behind all your successes. They make sacrifices every day to help you succeed. They are one of the reasons that you can work so hard! But in regular routine, you are not able to be with them as much as you want to! The break from work, allows you to show your gratitude to them by spending quality time with them. A break is a great time to learn more about each other, to learn about each other’s aspirations, and encourage each other. It is time to let everyone know that you care. It is also a time to remind yourself how much you are being cared for. I love being with my family. I take a lot of photos to capture the moments that will keep me smiling and in high spirits for days to come.

Do remember to take a longer break at least twice a year and many smaller ones (long weekends!) as often as you can! I assure you that these breaks will help you become more successful at work as well as at home. The break is an opportunity to grow!

I love this advice Manbir Kaur (ICF-MCC). I just scheduled a day to just hang with my daughter. I am redefining success to mean, among other things, the ability to control my time.
