schülke – supporting sustainable solutions
Every year, over 400 million tons of plastic is produced worldwide – one third of which is used just once. The equivalent of over 2000 lorries full of plastic is dumped into oceans, rivers, and lakes every day. This is why #worldenvironmentday on 5th June is focusing on a call to beat plastic pollution. A new report by the UN Environment Programme shows that plastic pollution can be reduced by 80 per cent by 2040 – if we act now .
At #schülke we are committed to developing sustainable but also highly effective infection prevention products. We recently introduced #mikrozid? universal wipes green line which are 100% plastic free with no microplastics. Offering a unique ecological alternative to conventional plastic-based wipes, mikrozid green line are manufactured from renewable sources with 100% FSC-certified materials and 100% green energy. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) management certification is only awarded to forests which are managed to strict environmental, social and economic standards.
In addition to their green credentials, mikrozid? universal wipes green line provide outstanding cleaning performance combined with maximum material compatibility. This is important because using inappropriate wipes is known to damage plastic surfaces of medical devices and sensitive equipment, leading to premature failure and disposal of devices. Whereas decontamination with a product compatible with the manufacturer’s recommendations will help sustain the life span of a device and help reduce unnecessary waste.
Sustainable plastic-free wipes are only one small step in our mission towards a greener future. In the UK, we only supply electric cars for our staff and 100% of our fleet vehicles are electric. Wherever possible we use packaging that has been recycled and most of our outer boxes can be recycled by customers. Our offices have become a largely paper-free environment, with electronic and cloud-based systems employed wherever practical.

We are constantly optimising our products and processes to minimise their environmental impact and sustainability is at the heart of all our new product development plans. We believe that patients’ lives depend on effective infection control today, but their future and ours depends on protecting the environment for tomorrow.
