Major professional sports leagues in the United States, including the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, WNBA, and NASCAR, have joined together to form the Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising. The Coalition's primary objective is to ensure that sports betting operators conduct their advertising campaigns responsibly and transparently.
We've seen multiple instances where sportsbook operators in the US violated advertising guidelines. For example, The Ohio Casino Control Commission took action against BetMGM, Caesars, and DraftKings for violating Ohio law and administrative rules concerning advertising during the first week of legal sports betting in the state. The Commission stated that all three companies ran advertisements without clear and conspicuous responsible gaming messaging. They also advertised "free" or "risk-free" bets on their platforms, violating the Ohio betting law.
The Coalition aims to establish guidelines for responsible consumer protection policies regarding sports betting advertising. They have outlined six fundamental principles that emphasize responsible sports betting advertising to achieve this.
? Sports betting should be marketed only to adults of legal betting age.
? Sports betting advertising should not promote irresponsible or excessive gambling or degrade the consumer experience.
? Sports betting advertisements should not be misleading.
? Sports betting advertisements should be in good taste.
? Publishers should have appropriate internal reviews of sports betting advertising.
? Publishers should review consumer complaints about sports betting advertising.
By adhering to these principles, the Coalition aims to minimize the negative impact of sports betting on consumers. In addition, although the Coalition is voluntary, it encourages sports betting firms to comply with its guidelines for responsible advertising.
The National Council on Problem Gambling has praised the Coalition's efforts to promote responsible sports betting advertising and has promised to work collaboratively with the Coalition to mitigate the adverse effects of problem gambling. As sports betting continues to gain popularity in the United States, it is critical to prioritize problem-gambling prevention and support while promoting responsible sports betting advertising to consumers.
Commercial sports betting revenue hit $7.5 billion in 2022 — a 72.7% increase from 2021's $4.3 billion — per data from the American Gaming Association. Unlike established markets such as the UK, where sports betting has been legal for decades, the US has had to adapt to the new landscape quickly. While existing guidelines and regulations exist, more is needed for this unique and rapidly changing industry. This limited guidance has led to concerns over the potential adverse effects of sports betting advertising, particularly on vulnerable populations such as minors or those with gambling addictions.

In recent years, sports gambling has become increasingly popular worldwide, with billions of dollars being wagered . However, with the rise of this industry comes the potential for corruption and illegal activity, as demonstrated in the recent scandal involving the Chinese Basketball Association Playoffs.
The story broke earlier this week, when Chinese media reported some strange happenings in the final 90 seconds of the game, where a coincidental string of turnovers allowed the Shanghai Sharks, who have the likes of former NBA players Eric Bledsoe and Michael Beasley on their roster, to advance in an elimination game. According to the reports, the two teams involved had conspired with bookmakers to manipulate the outcome of potentially several games in exchange for a large sum of money. The inquiry is focused on the Shanghai Sharks' remarkable comeback during the end of their game against the Jiangsu Dragons, which again was an elimination playoff game. The Dragons were ahead with a score of 100-96, and with less than two minutes left in regulation, they committed five consecutive turnovers. This allowed the Sharks to gain a 10-point lead, which resulted in their victory with a final score of 108-104. This win secured their place in the quarter-finals of the best-of-four series with a 2-1 record. As a result of this accusation of match fixing, the Shanghai Sharks, who are arguably China’s most popular basketball team, were immediately removed from the playoff race.
This news sent shockwaves in both the basketball world and the gambling industry, as it raises serious questions about the integrity of professional sports and the fairness of betting. Luckily, this is not something that has been seen in American professional sports in quite some time, but is certainly something that will need to be monitored extra carefully as sports betting legislation sweeps the nation. The US has been very meticulous when looking at introducing new forms of legal gaming, and that should give American gamblers a sense of relief in light of this new scandal including ex-NBA players.
Ultimately, the scandal involving Eric Bledsoe and Michael Beasley and the Shanghai Sharks serves as a grim but necessary reminder of the dangers and risks associated with sports gambling. While sports betting can be an exciting and enjoyable endeavor for many, it is important to be aware of the potential for corruption within sports, and that the integrity of the game is the most important thing at the end of the day.
What does Replika do??
The mission of Replika and its founder and CEO, Eugenia Kuyda, is to create compassionate AI whose north star goal is to eliminate loneliness and make people happy. Kuyda says that Replika needs to be there to answer your questions. It's supposed to have conversations with you that make you feel good.?
What is the problem Replica solves??
In 2020, Vivek Murthy, physician and former United States surgeon general, called loneliness "an invisible epidemic in America." Murthy wrote, "I started to recognize that many of the stories that I was hearing from people in small towns and big cities all across America were stories about addiction, about violence, about depression and anxiety. But behind them were threads of loneliness. And people wouldn't say to me, you know, 'My name is Meghna. I'm struggling with loneliness' But they would say, 'I feel like I have to deal with all of these problems by myself.' 'I feel like we're out there all alone and no one's looking out for us.' 'I feel like I'm invisible.' And time after time, when I began to hear this, it struck me that there is a much deeper pattern here, a pattern that I began to see as loneliness."?
Murthy continued, "And when I delved into the data, I began to see that this was not just me that was observing this, but that researchers who had been studying loneliness and using rigorous scales to assess the degree of loneliness that people were facing had found, in fact, that large percentages of our population, more than 20%, in fact, of the adult population in America admits to struggling with loneliness.?
“...more than 20%, in fact, of the adult population in America admits to struggling with loneliness. That's more people than have diabetes in our country. That's more adults that smoke in the United States.”?
That's more people than have diabetes in our country. That's more adults that smoke in the United States. And so that's when it dawned on me that there is something much, much bigger happening here than I had previously thought."?
Fantasy sports in Africa are far from matching the popularity of sports betting. GeoPoll conducted a survey in Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda, showing that 72% of respondents had participated in betting, of which 53% were in football betting. However, the fantasy sports side of betting is very foreign to sports fans in Africa.
Compared to sports betting, fantasy sports offer some advantages. The primary benefit is that players compete against each other rather than against the house. This means that a player’s result largely depends on their skill level. However, this also means that unskilled players are at a disadvantage compared to top players. The second advantage is the low entry barrier, as most fantasy sports sites do not require players to pay before playing, while users need money to participate in sports betting.
Despite these advantages, the fantasy sports industry in Africa faces several challenges. One of the significant challenges is the need for more awareness of the concept among many African sports fans. Fantasy sports is still a relatively new phenomenon in Africa, and many fans still need to become familiar with the concept. Another significant challenge is the requirement for a large amount of data, which is not always reliable in Africa. It’s clear that progress is being made, but there is still a significant gap in the infrastructure required to support online fantasy sports platforms. While Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda have made strides in this area, many other African countries still lag behind. However, efforts are underway to bridge this gap and create an environment in which fantasy sports can thrive across the continent. As this progress continues, more and more African countries will likely be able to support these platforms and offer their sports fans a new and exciting way to engage with their favorite sports.
While sports betting continues to dominate the gambling industry in Africa, the fantasy sports industry is gradually gaining traction. The growth of the fantasy sports industry in Africa will depend on several factors, such as the availability of reliable data, infrastructure, and awareness of the concept among African sports fans. Betting companies could also add fantasy sports to their products, making the competition even stiffer. However, with the right conditions in place, fantasy sports could grow significantly in the upcoming years.
The onboarding experience is crucial for any mobile app, as it is the first interaction a user has with your product. A well-designed onboarding experience can make or break an app's success, as it can determine whether a user will continue to use your app or abandon it. At BettorFantasy, we've paid close attention to our onboarding experience and have seen a positive uptick in our core business metrics as a result. In this article, we will explore some tips and best practices for improving your app's onboarding experience.
Keep it Simple
The first rule of onboarding is to keep it simple. Don't overwhelm users with too much information or too many steps. Keep the process straightforward and intuitive, so users can quickly understand what your app does and how to use it.
Set Expectations
Clearly set expectations for what the app does and how the user will benefit from using it. Use concise language and imagery to explain your app's unique value proposition.
Use Progressive Onboarding
Progressive onboarding breaks up the onboarding process into smaller steps, so users can gradually learn about your app's features and functionality. This approach allows users to quickly get started with your app and then learn more as they use it.
Use Visual Cues
Visual cues, such as arrows or highlights, can help guide users through the onboarding process and draw their attention to important features. Use simple, clear visuals to help users understand what they need to do and where they need to go next.
Reduce Friction
Reduce friction by eliminating unnecessary steps or barriers that might prevent users from completing the onboarding process. Make it easy for users to sign up or log in, and avoid requiring too much personal information upfront.
Provide Help and Support
Make sure users can easily access help and support if they need it. Provide clear instructions and links to FAQs, tutorials, or other resources that can help users solve common problems.
Test and Iterate
Finally, test your onboarding process with real users and iterate based on their feedback. Use analytics to track user behavior and identify areas for improvement.
In summary, improving your app's onboarding experience is crucial for driving user engagement and retention. Keep it simple, set expectations, use progressive onboarding, provide visual cues, reduce friction, provide help and support, and test and iterate to continuously improve the experience. By following these best practices, you can create an onboarding experience that sets your app up for success.
Today, I decided to just try to appeal to the rationality of our colleagues. Several industry members of credibility have been using expressions such as ‘we’re closer than ever to the regulations’. Are we?
Because technically, it never happened. Still.
So, is this perhaps just wishful thinking? Does the Federal Administration and the other politicians deserve such expectations?
I think the answer is no.
I think the industry lost enough time trying to make sense of drafts of regulations and legislations. We welcome the public sector people interested in a dialogue.
But unlike the corporate world, they important names until last year vanished due to an administration change.
And nothing, absolutely nothing happened.
Instead of investing on parallel backchanneling, I insist that our industry should adopt a more cohesive approach.
Draft our own suggestion of taxation, perhaps copying a lot of what happened in Malta, and say to the government ‘this looks like a good way to produce tax revenue and establish a white market’.
Because at the end of the way, private agents are more prone to swift decisions and actions. We have to be, every quarter is like a school report card and things are evaluated and scrutinized constantly by boards of directors and shareholders. The government is a lot slower than this.
Part of what motivates this tone and these words are 15 years in the industry and zero true action from the government in terms of organizing our market.
It’s time for some actual action and promises just aren’t enough.
While I agree the last ventilated taxation proposals – which were analyzed in the last edition of this publication – don’t seem quite viable, I think it’s time for us to analyze only real, actual stuff that has already happened than discussing the latest rumors. We’re not taking ourselves seriously if we just jump into the latest gossip – rumors about the regulations – which have changed a lot in the last years. Let’s analyze actual facts. Enough analysis of rumors in my opinion. Food for thought for my colleagues in Brazil and the international colleagues with interests in the development of this region as a gambling market.

We know today that digital transformation is critical for any organization. It has the ability to help businesses improve operational efficiency and digital transformation enables businesses to offer a better customer experience. And it’s the gaming sector that has been at the forefront of pushing the limits of digital technology, from virtual reality to cloud gaming. The introduction of digital technology has made it possible to play games at any moment, whether or not other players are online, Cloud technology has completely changed online gaming, freeing up space and providing more storage digitally, and making online gaming very accessible.
So how does this all impact with Asia and why is Asia so relevant to this discussion.?
In Asia, digital transformation has become increasingly important due to the region's advances in technology and the rapid adoption of digital technologies by consumers. Southeast Asia, in particular, has seen the fastest digital transformation rates anywhere in the world, with internet penetration rates and smartphone usage surpassing those in many Western countries. One of the reasons for this growth is the rise of e-commerce platforms, which have revolutionized the way people shop in Southeast Asia. These platforms have made it easier for businesses to reach customers in remote areas and have provided consumers with access to a wider range of products at competitive prices. As a result, e-commerce has become a key driver of economic growth in the region.
Another reason for the rapid adoption of digital technologies in Asia is the growing popularity of mobile payments. In countries like Thailand, Singapore, China and India, mobile payment platforms have become ubiquitous, with millions of people using them for everyday transactions. This has led to the development of a cashless economy in these countries, which has made it easier for businesses to transact with customers and for consumers to make purchases.
Furthermore, the growth of digital technologies has also led to the emergence of new business models, such as the sharing economy. Companies have disrupted traditional industries, such as transportation and hospitality, by offering innovative services that leverage digital technologies. These companies have become some of the most valuable startups in the world, and their success has demonstrated the potential of digital transformation in Asia. When you combine the two, we start to see how Gaming can not only benefit but lead the digital revolution. Advancements in technology have also led to 3D graphics, high-definition graphics, and simple transactions, which have changed the gaming industry significantly. The gaming sector can advance greatly with the introduction and continued development of digital technology by providing more accessible and immersive gaming experiences, as well as by improving graphics and simplifying transactions.
This all requires investment and design; it involves customer participation and involvement. By leveraging digital technologies, organizations can quickly adapt to changing market conditions. Digital transformation allows businesses to provide a seamless experience across all these channels, making it easier for customers to engage with them. Critically digital transformation allows businesses to gain insights into their operations and customer behaviour. With the vast amount of data available today, businesses can use analytics tools to gain insights into their operations and customer behaviour, which helps them make informed decisions. This also allows them to personalize their products and services, which can lead to increased customer loyalty and revenue.
In conclusion, digital transformation has become a critical aspect of business strategy for any organization looking to stay competitive in today's business landscape. It offers numerous benefits, including improved operational efficiency, better customer experiences, and increased revenue.?
In Asia, digital transformation has become especially relevant, given the region's advances in technology and the rapid adoption of digital technologies by consumers. As the region continues to embrace digital transformation, businesses that fail to adapt risk being left behind. Therefore, it is essential for organizations to prioritize digital transformation to stay ahead of the competition and succeed in the Asian market.

Colombia is one of the biggest markets in Latin America. With a population of over 50 million, the fourth-biggest economy on the continent, a mobile penetration rate of roughly 56%, and a well-documented national passion for football, Colombia presents a massive opportunity for online gambling businesses — especially online sportsbooks.?
The Colombian gaming regulator, Coljuegos, announced this week that it authorized the operation of the immediate prize games for the games operated by the Internet through Agreement 02 of the 30th of March 2021 and established the conditions for its implementation.
The entity detailed that, through the Agreement, the category of immediate prize games consists of a series of counterpart games in which, in exchange for paying a bet value for the game, the user has the possibility of predicting the number, letter, image, symbol and the combination, sequence or pattern among them, which must coincide with the result of a random number generator (RNG) as determined by the rules of the game.
Games with permanent betting mechanics such as chances, traditional lottery, instant lottery (scratch), pre-printed lotto, online lotto, or Super Astro are outside the new Agreement.
According to Agreement 02 issued in 2021, the games operated by the Internet can be offered to the public in commercial premises that develop the economic activities indicated in article 1.5.8 of Agreement 08 of 2020, as it happens with the Keno mechanics provided by the concessionaire Luckia Colombia S.A.S.
For this reason, the mechanics developed by the operators of novelty games through the Internet, which comply with the regulations of the immediate prize games and have completed the respective legal, technical, and contractual procedures before the Legal Office of Coljuegos, are a legal offer in the Colombian market, whose social purpose is to finance the health of Colombians.
According to the regulating entity, the operators of new games operated by Internet authorized to offer games with an immediate prize, as of April 2023, are Luckia Colombia, Meridian Gaming Colombia, Colbet, Servicios Distrired, Teclino, Corredor Empresarial, Games and Betting.
Finally, Coljuegos invites the concessionaires of the games operated by the Internet to carry out the procedures before the Legal Office to include in their offers the immediate prize games, prior compliance with the legal and regulatory requirements, to counteract the diverse modalities of illegal games operated by the Internet.
Colombia became the first country in Latin America to regulate online gambling in 2016, and the gaming and betting market has continuously been growing since licensing began in 2017. With the 2016 regulation of the online sector, almost all forms of gambling, both land-based and online, are now legal in the country — except for online horserace betting; only Coljuegos, the country’s regulatory body, and private operations with government concessions may operate trackside betting.?
The iGaming industry, like any other industry, faces user acquisition challenges that can hinder its growth potential. One key challenge is regulatory compliance, as iGaming operators need to adhere to strict regulations related to age verification, anti-money laundering (AML), and Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements. Additionally, building trust with users, providing a seamless user experience, improving operational efficiency, enhancing security, and adapting to mobile and digital channels are also critical factors in acquiring and retaining users. Automated ID verification solutions such as OCR Labs have emerged as a powerful tool to tackle these challenges and propel the iGaming industry, especially sports betting, towards success.
Regulatory compliance is a top priority for iGaming operators. Failure to comply with age verification and AML regulations can result in severe penalties, legal issues, and damage to the reputation of the operator. Automated ID verification solutions can streamline the compliance process by accurately verifying the identity and age of users during the onboarding process. These solutions use advanced technologies such as biometric authentication, document authenticity checks, and liveness detection to quickly and accurately verify user identities. This helps operators ensure that only eligible users who meet the legal age requirements can create accounts and participate in sports betting, reducing the risk of underage gambling and ensuring compliance with regulatory obligations.
Building trust with users is crucial in the iGaming industry. Users need to trust the operators with their personal and financial information, as well as the fairness and integrity of the betting platform. Automated ID verification can play a key role in enhancing user trust. By implementing robust ID verification processes, operators can demonstrate their commitment to user safety, security, and compliance. Users are more likely to trust operators that have stringent identity verification measures in place, which can positively impact user acquisition and retention. Trust can be further enhanced by using trusted and reputable automated ID verification providers that adhere to industry standards and regulations.
User experience is a critical factor in acquiring and retaining users in the iGaming industry. A cumbersome and time-consuming onboarding process can deter users from creating accounts and participating in sports betting. Automated ID verification solutions can significantly improve the user experience by providing a seamless and frictionless onboarding process. Users can easily upload their identification documents and complete the verification process online, without the need for manual document checks or visits to physical locations. This reduces the time and effort required to create an account and start betting, resulting in a smoother and more convenient user experience. A seamless onboarding process can lead to higher user conversion rates and increased user acquisition.
Operational efficiency is another area where automated ID verification can provide significant benefits to the iGaming industry. Manual ID verification processes can be time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to errors. Automated solutions can streamline the verification process, reducing the need for manual intervention and allowing operators to process a large number of verifications in real-time. This can result in faster user onboarding, quicker account activation, and smoother operations, ultimately leading to improved user acquisition and retention. Automated ID verification solutions can also provide detailed reports and analytics, allowing operators to monitor and optimize their verification processes, further enhancing operational efficiency.
Security is of paramount importance in the iGaming industry, as it deals with sensitive user information and financial transactions. Automated ID verification solutions typically come with advanced security features such as biometric authentication, liveness detection, and document authenticity checks. These measures can help detect and prevent fraud attempts, such as identity theft or the use of fake documents. By implementing robust security measures, operators can protect user data and enhance the security of their platform. This helps build user trust and confidence in the security of their personal and financial information, which can positively impact user acquisition and retention.
Furthermore, automated ID verification can also help iGaming operators in building a robust and compliant customer database. Verified user data obtained through the ID verification process can be used for ongoing customer due diligence, AML monitoring, and KYC updates. This can help operators maintain accurate and up-to-date customer records, comply with ongoing regulatory requirements, and mitigate the risks associated with fraud, money laundering, and other illicit activities. A reliable customer database can also provide valuable insights for marketing and targeted user acquisition strategies, helping operators optimize their marketing efforts and improve their user acquisition campaigns.
In conclusion, automated ID verification is a powerful tool that can help the iGaming industry, particularly sports betting, overcome user acquisition challenges. By streamlining regulatory compliance, building user trust, enhancing user experience, improving operational efficiency, enhancing security measures, and addressing responsible gambling concerns, automated ID verification can contribute to a smoother and more successful user acquisition process. Operators that implement automated ID verification solutions can benefit from increased user trust, higher user conversion rates, improved operational efficiency, enhanced security measures, and a robust customer database. As the iGaming industry continues to grow and evolve, automated ID verification is becoming an essential tool for operators to ensure compliance, build trust, and acquire and retain users in the highly competitive sports betting market.

ASA rules Barcelona players as ‘famous’
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint against a Facebook advertisement from BetVictor, which featured then-Barcelona football players Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
BetVictor has protested its innocence, stating that it believed it had not breached the Code because ‘CAP guidance stated that when a person or character was used to illustrate a subject of strong appeal to under-18s, their association with the subject was not a basis alone for the ASA to find an ad in breach of the Code.’
However, the ASA have ruled otherwise, stating that the ad was ‘likely to have strong appeal to under-18-year-olds.’
All roads PointsBet out of US?
In a significant move in the US sports betting market, PointsBet has hired investment bank Moelis & Company to help it sell its North American operations.
This is largely down to the company – which is reportedly the seventh-largest sports betting operator after DraftKings and FanDuel – has struggled to acquire market share in the US.
PointsBet reported $120m in revenue for the second half of 2022, a 28% year-over-year growth that was primarily due to lower marketing expenses and the renegotiation of its marketing agreement with NBCUniversal.
It also saved money by cancelling its operations application in Massachusetts, which legalised online sports betting in March.
The Star plummets.. and plummets.. and plummets
Following months of controversy and multiple regulatory failures, which led to a AU$100m (US$62m) fine from the New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC), the Star Entertainment Group has now let 500 employees go.
The move has been attributed to 'significant and rapid deterioration in operating conditions' in Sydney.
According to an announcement made two months after posting a AU$1.3bn loss for the first half of FY23, the group's current financial performance is at ‘unprecedented low levels’ (excluding the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic).
Because of this, the firm directed a strategic assessment of The Star Sydney, eliminated short-term and other incentives for FY23.
Vincent Bouvet: The Chief Financial Officer
The Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer, weeks after appointing a new CEO, has now revealed that Vincent Bouvet has become its new CFO.
The 49-year-old has worked in high financial positions for other companies, including the Sodexo Group, where he was also the CFO. Bouvet has now taken the role of CFO for Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer, where his predecessor Yves de Toytot left to pursue personal projects.
He will work with Albert Manzone, the aforementioned CEO, who started his role on 12 April.
Keeping it friendly
US Integrity has announced a new deal with American Gaming Association’s (AGA) ‘Have A Game Plan. Bet Responsibly’ campaign, which revolves around four core principles that establish a foundation for responsible gambling.
These include setting a budget, keeping it friendly and social, knowing the odds before playing and staying with legal, regulated operators.
Matthew Holt, US Integrity President and Founder, said: “Responsible gaming education goes hand in hand with our mission to protect consumers and competitions.
“We look forward to teaming up with the AGA and Have A Game Plan partners across the sports and gaming ecosystem to help advance this important cause.”
