The Scary

The Scary

What scares you about people and culture initiatives?? What scares you about finding the best talent for a role?? What scares you about coaching unique individuals?? What scares you about strategy and planning?? What scares you about leadership development?

So often, I hear leaders tell me that it’s always been one and done – nothing lasts – vanished like a ghost when it comes to their culture elevation efforts.? We put on the “strengthen our culture” costume for a month, training session, team building, event or guest speaker.

A renewed culture starts by taking off the masks from the past and re-focusing on the “guts” of what truly makes an organization and individuals unique.

No trick here – want a guide through the haunted cultural house?

Nothing to be frightened of if you invest in the opportunity of what the best organizational cultures provide – a strong values foundation, engaged and optimized talent, a clear way of working, and never-ending learning.? Sustainability is the surprising element most miss.

I spoke with two leaders this week who were unafraid to commit to a vision of the future but wanted help navigating their neighborhood from house to house – team to team.? By next October their bag will be filled with treats.? It can’t happen in one day, but it can with a people touchpoint plan.

What current culture candy would you trade for a better outcome – for better engagement – for better bottom-line results?

It’s not a “boo,” but rather a “who.”

Shawn, I wonder if the hold back is fear. Fear of being alone on culture island. Your point of finding your tribe, house by house, team by team is valid. Unless the culture was intentional from the start, it has grown by default. It won't change overnight, the best of cultures happens organically, with the most important changes coming from within each team member - like a beautiful slow cooked meal that when ready nourishes everyone. Thanks for the thoughts this morning.
