Scary 1-Day Seminar Story
Years ago, I was a language instructor, and I used to work at educational complexes around the city. I was earning a decent income. I was pretty popular with my students and everything was going fine. It was really normal; nothing fancy. I wasn't a big name in my field, and I wasn't really well-known. I wasn't charging premium fees. I didn't have a very strong brand. I was just someone who was doing a good job as an EFL instructor.
But at one point I was among the very first few people who thought of the idea of doing crash courses for high school students who wanted to enter university. So, I started to do one-month crash courses to prepare my students for the university entrance exams, and then I ventured into one-day seminars! One-day crash course seminars for my students to prepare them for the university entrance exam.
And, at first, people objected to this idea! People found it crazy! “How can you prepare your students in just one day?! How do you manage to do that? Unless you water it down and do a terrible job and cut around the corner and do a half-baked thing, unless you're doing that, how can you manage to prepare your students in a single day?”
So, people opposed to the idea but I somehow managed to put together a really good program as a one-day seminar, and I really went all in! I rented a space with a thousand people capacity, which was really scary at the time. I put in lot of time, effort, money, and energy and I made it work! It was very stressful, but eventually, with the help of my students, with the help of my friends and so many other people, I made it work!
And after that, it was epic! It went crazy, it went bananas, and my growth was exponential! Everyone was now aware of my name. 'Who is that young man that has managed to bring in a thousand people into a one-day seminar to prepare his students for the university entrance exam?' they asked.
So, that was one of the MAJOR things that made me really well-known for my topic and in my field, and people started to actually pay attention. I got invited to seminars all over the country and people started copying me (not me, it wasn't just me, it was me and a handful of other people who started this kind of movement), and nowadays everyone else is doing that as so many other experts started to copy us.
The point I'm trying to make here is that if you want to build a really successful personal brand, if you want to stand out, if you want to go to the next level, if you want to charge premium fees, you need to do something different! You need to make a big bold promise! And people will oppose to that! People will object to that! And there is nothing wrong with it because whenever you come up with something new and innovative, ordinary people will not find it easy to comprehend. And people will oppose to that. And that's fine, that's OK, and you have to be comfortable with the fact that so many of your ideas will NOT work. And that's OK, too! Because even if ONE of them works just like the case study that I mentioned, it will work wonders for you.
So, my point really here is that if you want to build a strong personal brand you must have a big bold promise that helps you stand out from the crowd.
