Scania to push for sustainable value chains at COP28

The shift towards a sustainable transport system requires that the value chain works together in one joint direction. At COP28, targeting a swift lockstep transition, Scania will call on transport buyers to drive change by using their spending power and policymakers to introduce effective incentives.

COP28, taking place in Dubai the first week of December, is the 2023 edition of the United Nations annual climate change conference. It is expected to gather 80,000 representatives from for instance business, government, science and civil society.

This year’s edition of COP will focus on the global stocktake – a process for countries and stakeholders to identify where collective progress towards the Paris Agreement is being made and where it is not. Climate negotiations will focus on updating and increasing the goals of the national action plans.

“We will attend COP28 maintaining that the technology for sustainable transportation is ready and about to be scaled. For the shift to reach its full potential, the whole value chain has to strive in the same direction. Scania relies on forward-leaning partners and action among key stakeholders, not least policymakers,” says Emilia K?ck, Public Affairs Manager, who is the project leader for Scania’s COP28 participation.

Scania is determined to use its spending power to drive sustainability. Prior to COP28, the company announced that it is now converting its decarbonisation target for the supply chain into purchasing requirements. By 2030, all purchases of batteries, steel, aluminium and cast iron for European production are targeted to be “green”. *

At COP28, Scania will encourage transport buyers to take the same action in their supply chains.

“The demand for sustainable solutions among transport buyers is increasing, but it is still not in line with what it is required to make a transition in line with the Paris Agreement. A broad implementation of decarbonisation targets and purchasing requirements would have a major effect, not least should it be combined with policy action increasing the profitability of zero-emission transportation and securing enabling factors such as green energy and charging infrastructure,” says Evalena Falck, Head of Strategic Accounts.

In Dubai, Scania will be represented by Emilia K?ck, Public Affairs Manager, Evalena Falck, Head of Strategic Account Management, and Per Norgren, Supply Chain Decarbonisation Manager.

Scania Middle East will also host a side event, a partners' conference where distributors in the area will discuss sustainable transport solutions and go on a tour round the open area of the COP conference.

Scania will also arrange two seminars, while meeting with decision-makers, companies and attending other parties' arrangements. The subjects of the seminars will be:

?*These four hotspots constitute around 80 percent of carbon emissions arising from Scania’s production materials. Scania’s definition of “green” requires eliminating the main sources of emissions by utilising new technologies, green electricity and/or recycled material. In batteries, for example, access to green energy in production is decisive. In flat steel production, replacing coal with green hydrogen is key.?
