Scaling your leadership – 3 of 8

"Knowing what you don't know is more useful than being brilliant." - Charlie Munger

This quote strongly supports the argument for self-knowledge. According to leading experts, self-knowledge is the first piece of the puzzle to unlock success. And when it comes to self-knowledge, I see Charlie Munger as an expert.

If you're not familiar with him, you're missing out. Munger is Warren Buffett's right-hand man, and Buffett credits Munger with many of his successes over the sixty years they've worked together. Even at age 95, Munger has a passion for learning in his career, while many would claim they already know everything.

"I constantly see people who are not that smart or diligent growing up in life, but they are learning machines. They go to bed every night knowing a little more than they did when they woke up, and young people, that helps, especially when you have a long road ahead." - Charlie Munger

Improving your leadership largely depends on having a learning attitude. Every day, we face new situations that require new knowledge, approaches, and strategies. To maximize these situations, we need to have a deep reservoir at our disposal. The best way to do this is to always be learning and to maintain an attitude of readiness to learn.

Anne Frank articulated this well in her diary: "How noble and good everyone could be if, at the end of each day, they were to review their own behavior and consider what has been good and bad. Undoubtedly, in the course of time, we would improve." - Anne Frank

Anne and Charlie make it clear that it is essential to have a learning attitude and to apply these learnings in our lives every day. If you want to improve your leadership to better respond to our changing environment, reflect on your end-of-day routine.

What are you doing before bed? Will you be a little wiser than you were when you woke up? Do you have eyes to see everything that is happening around you? Are you filtering everything through the lens of truth, which is the Word of God?

Here's a lesson: Every day, we have opportunities all around us to learn, grow, and develop better versions of ourselves. This growth doesn't always come in a pretty, easy-to-digest package. Often, this growth and learning come from moments of struggle, trials, and situations we wish we didn't encounter. Another reality is that we learn from voices and perspectives that, on the surface, we don't appreciate or agree with.

No matter the situation or circumstance, having a learning stance puts us in a humble position to learn and live our lives wanting to go to bed healthier than we were when we woke up.

God, prepare my heart for what You have for me today. Your word is alive, and I believe You will meet me in its pages.
