Scaling Through Integration: How Technology Enhances Human Care in Recovery
Drew LaBoon
Chief Operating Officer, Pathways Recovery Centers | Founder, President of the Board of Directors at Pathways to Innovation | Principal, CEO at The NeptuneBoon Group
Here’s the hard truth: Far too many treatment centers are drowning in paperwork, prioritizing day-to-day survival above innovations in client care. At Pathways Recovery Centers, we’re done pretending that this is acceptable. Leveraging technology across an organization can eradicate such barriers to transformation while introducing game-changing efficiencies.
Ultimately, this evolution calls for a reorientation of our end goals: Scaling a behavioral health business is not just about increasing beds; it's about enhancing our capacity to transform lives. That’s why Pathways Recovery Centers is dedicated to innovations that allow us to grow sustainably while improving client outcomes — all at the same time.
The Human-Tech Balance in Recovery
Let's be clear: Technology will never replace the human connection essential to recovery. However, when implemented thoughtfully, it can amplify your team's ability to provide exceptional care day in and day out. Selectively integrating the right tech solutions allows clinicians to spend more time with clients — and less time on administrative tasks. For example, HIPAA-compliant AI technology in CRMs like eleos can help synthesize client sessions and make compliance tasks easier than ever. With this perspective as our foundation, we can implement a thoughtful growth strategy.
The Three-Pillar Approach to Sustainable Growth
1. Staff Support & Development
Burnout isn't inevitable. Rather, it's a sign of system failure. To ensure that our operations run smoothly and our team stays balanced, we've implemented:
- Mandatory mental health days (non-negotiable, one per month)
- AI-assisted scheduling that ensures balanced case loads (because our clinicians are superheroes, not superhuman)
- Weekly micro-training sessions using our digital learning platform to educate and inspire (20 minutes, high impact, no fluff)
The result? Staff turnover rates that drop quarter after quarter.
2. Improving Client Care?
Technology reduces friction for clients as well, making the entire treatment episode easier — and ultimately more effective. For example, we've hand-picked partners to build collaborations that deliver results for clients, including:
- Pretaa for 24/7 biometric tracking through a discreet wearable device
- FinPay for transparent financial discussions and payments
- Dazos CRM for comprehensive client journey tracking and predictive analysis for personalized care

Not only do these integrations make the client experience better; but also, in reducing administrative time, they free up more staff hours for direct client care.
3. Measuring What Matters
How do we know that our innovations are delivering results? Just like any other modality, every decision to implement across the organization must be evidence-based. Tracking outcomes data in the context of individual integrations has allowed us to:
- Measure client progress in real-time
- Adjust treatment plans based on data-driven insights
- Maintain consistent communication with clients post-discharge
We’re not just gathering data; we’re using it to transform lives. Ultimately, quantifiable results include increased client satisfaction scores, reduced AMAs, better staff satisfaction metrics, and improved long-term client outcomes.
The Innovation Playbook
Innovation is such a massive mission to conquer, and every day brings another charlatan hawking the next-best-thing. How can you begin to innovate at your company without going all-in on the wrong solution?
1. Start Small: We piloted each technology with one team before rolling out across our network of facilities.
2. Listen to Staff: Team feedback shaped our tech stack and implementation.
3. Measure Everything: Data drives decisions, but never at the expense of human intuition.
4. Invest in Training: Technology is only as effective as the people using it.
Scaling isn't about choosing between technology and human touch – it's about using technology to amplify our human capacity to heal. When implemented thoughtfully, technology doesn't distance us from our clients; it brings us closer to our mission of transforming lives.
What's your experience with technology integration in treatment settings? I'd love to hear your thoughts and insights in the comments below.
