Scaling Snowdon: A Summer Bank Holiday Expedition to Remember
Andrew Smalley
Be honest with yourself for honesty starts at home, appreciate people and look for the best in all things
How did you spend your August bank holiday? Well, I spent mine in quite an adventurous way. We climbed Mount Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales, and it was an unforgettable journey. Alongside a group of friends, we embarked on a remarkable trek that combined challenge, camaraderie, and breathtaking landscapes.
With our backpacks loaded and hiking boots laced up, we gathered at the trailhead of the Rhyd-Ddu Path. The air was excited as we looked ahead to the day's adventure. Our goal was to cover a distance of around 18 kilometres and ascend a total of 1200 meters, it was up, down and finally back up to the top at 1085 meters
As the sun hid high in the sky, our journey began covered in cloud. We set a steady pace that matched the rhythm of our collective enthusiasm. The trail led us through various landscapes—babbling streams, and open meadows. Guided by the trail markers and a map, we inched closer and closer to our ultimate destination.
Our path formed a loop known as the Cym Tregalan Loop, which meandered through the countryside, giving us glimpses of natural beauty that seemed to expand with every step. Amid our progress, we paused to read the inscriptions on Gladstone Rock—a moment of reflection that added a deeper layer to our adventure. Our bond grew stronger as we shared stories, laughter, and encouragement.
At a pivotal junction, we transitioned onto a different path—the Watkin Path. This introduction of novelty marked a significant turn in our adventure. The trail led us upwards, and the increasing elevation became more noticeable with each stride. Despite the physical exertion, the breathtaking scenery and the anticipation of reaching the summit kept our spirits soaring.
After some time, we reached a significant point—the convergence of paths that marked a critical juncture of our journey. Here, we paused, taking in the immense progress we had made.
Continuing the demanding terrain, our determination and collective effort fueled our onward march. Despite the physical challenges, our excitement remained palpable; the summit was tantalizingly close.
With each step, our sense of accomplishment grew stronger. The panoramic views around us were a testament to our hard work. Upon reaching the summit, we were greeted by a breathtaking vista, and a shared feeling of unity and triumph washed over us.

With fatigue setting in but our hearts full, we made our way back home. We each carried the tale of our hike on that cloudy August day. The distance we had travelled wasn't just measured in kilometres—it was a journey of friendship, determination, and the thrill of conquering new heights.
