"I just want to run my business. Instead, I feel like I'm running a kindergarten every day." or "I just can't find good people!"
Sound familiar? Take heart because you're not alone in this struggle. Many new clients share this sentiment and work with me to overcome it. The key to breaking free from this cycle lies in building your business's overall capability, and this can be achieved by creating a dream team that will propel your business to new heights.
So what is the problem exactly? In my experience, it's widespread for teams to lack the essential accountability and problem-solving skills needed for a dream team, irrespective of whether these team members are integrators or doers in your organisation. However, once you overcome this hurdle, the benefits are immense. You'll have a team that can handle accountability and drive solutions, making scaling for 'sale' a realistic goal.
Without a team that can handle accountability and drive solutions, scaling for "sale" remains a distant goal because the onus to do that will always land back on your shoulders. And that means you'll be spinning your wheels, spending most of your time working in the business instead of on it.
So, how do you build that dream team? Here are my top 3 tips:
1?? Involve Your Team in Building Your Annual Strategy Scorecard:
This creates a shared understanding of your vision and current business context and builds awareness and alignment. What's more, involving your team in the discussion and finalisation of the top goals and KPIs for the year ahead drives accountability down to that team because these now "belong" to the people who created them. These goals and KPIs can then be cascaded down and embedded into an individual's personal development plans, creating a direct line of sight between their day-to-day role and the business's strategy.
2?? Foster a Solution-Oriented Culture:
Create a culture that challenges your team to come to you with solutions, not just problems. If someone comes to you with a problem, thank them, then task them with brainstorming the best solution and only come back once that's done. Reassure them that it doesn't have to be perfect because you can guide them to refine it later. This cultivates problem-solving and innovation skills and empowers your team to take ownership.
3?? Master the Art of Coaching:
Make coaching a top priority for you. Let your team know they are accountable for their KPIs, but you're there to support and guide them. By coaching, you start passing on your knowledge and skills, building succession, and empowering your people to excel and achieve their goals.
Building a dream team is about creating a culture of accountability, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.
