Expanding Our Network in Liverpool

This Tuesday, we hosted our first networking event in Liverpool at 92 Degrees Coffee. It was inspiring to see founders building connections, sharing insights and exploring new opportunities!

Small Business Spotlight

Introducing this week's spotlight, Lucie Macleod , Founder and CEO of Hair Syrup . ??

Lucie’s journey began in 2019 after struggling to find a natural pre-wash treatment for her over-bleached hair. She made her own solution in her student kitchen while studying at university through trial and error and landed on a formula that works!

Seeing the popularity of self-care and hair care videos on TikTik, she decided to post a video of her hair care routine, using her homemade treatment and showing tangible results.

With a tiny following of under 5 users, what started as a personal project turned into something much bigger when her TikTok tutorial went viral.

The post sparked massive interest and received upwards of 500,000 views & thousands of comments asking about the pre-wash treatment she had used (now known as Hair Syrup)

Lucy's business quickly outgrew, and her parents' conservatory and hair syrup now lives in a warehouse in the South of Wales with over a dozen staff members. Hair Syrup products are now stocked by major retailers like Superdrug, Boots, and ASOS.

Today, Hair Syrup has evolved into a fast-growing brand with a loyal fanbase and thousands of bottles sold! ??


What can we learn from Lucy Macleod's journey?

An authentic, product-first approach bakes trust into a brand and allows you to resonate and foster a loyal audience.

  • Identify a Pain Point: Lucie started by solving her hair care issues, testing formulas on herself with no intention of selling the product. Feedback from her friends and family, along with the viral TikTok content, led to the creation of Hair Syrup as a brand.
  • Leverage Social Media: From viral TikTok success to a thriving brand, Lucie scaled rapidly, taking Hair Syrup from a kitchen project to a warehouse operation. Her viral TikTok tutorial turned a personal project into a business with a product people were asking her for.
  • Focus on Authenticity: Hair and self-care content was gaining traction on TikTok, and Lucie was going through her own hair care journey. By documenting her struggles and the progress she made, her audience saw the product’s value and built trust. This genuine approach led to viral success, resonated with consumers and laid the foundation for Hair Syrup’s growth.
