Scaling New Heights: How Hiking the Appalachian Trail Shaped My Grit and Leadership in Marketing

Recently, a close friend told me that one of the things she admired most about me is my grit. That compliment made me pause and reflect on my journey—both in life and work—and how I’ve pushed myself to persevere through challenges, whether it’s leading marketing campaigns or hiking a rugged segment of the Appalachian Trail.
The Appalachian Trail (A.T.), known as one of the most iconic and challenging long-distance trails in the world, spans roughly 2,190 miles from Georgia to Maine. What makes it so revered among hikers isn’t just its length, but its relentless elevation changes, remote wilderness, and unpredictable weather. It requires endurance, planning, and mental fortitude—traits that I found equally essential in my marketing career. This summer, I tackled a segment of the trail, relying heavily on my preparation, equipment and grit, which became my lifeline. The physical and mental challenges of the A.T. taught me that success isn’t just about reaching the summit, but about pushing through obstacles and savoring the journey.
In my professional life, I apply this same grit. I’ve led teams through product launches and marketing campaigns that yielded remarkable results, including $12M in sales in the first year and an additional $22M over the following two years. These accomplishments weren’t achieved overnight; they came from careful planning, adaptation, and a relentless commitment to growth. Much like hiking the Appalachian Trail, marketing requires resilience, strategic execution, and the ability to navigate complex terrain to reach success.

What drives me most is the process of pushing limits—not just achieving the goal but embracing the struggle along the way. Whether it’s developing go-to-market strategies, managing a high-performing marketing team, or optimizing campaign KPIs, I approach every challenge with the mindset that obstacles are part of the journey. My experience has taught me that with perseverance, even the most daunting tasks—whether in the wilderness or the boardroom—can lead to great rewards.
I’ve come to value grit as one of my greatest strengths, both as a leader and an individual. My passion for growth, and my determination to succeed, are what set me apart and ensure I continue to reach new heights, no matter the challenge
