Scaling Games in 2024
The game industry is enduring a tumultuous period — but amidst the layoffs, the technological acceleration, the new platforms and shifting business models — there is also enormous opportunity… But only if one invests wisely.
Here is a preview of what I cover in my recent article, Game Development Trends in 2024: Crisis and Opportunity:
?? Revenue is down, while costs are up: this is why layoffs are happening. But what can teams do to navigate the next year?
?? “This Game is Fun, Bro” — the divide between the mainstream gaming markets and what vocal groups claim on social media; the importance of a great game.
?? What spatial computing will and won’t do for gaming
?? The disruptive effect of creator-led platforms such as Roblox
?? Longer-term impact of Apple’s adversity towards developers
?? The Web Renaissance — what’s going to happen due to WebGPU, and the relative disadvantage of native mobile marketing, and other technological innovations
?? Cracks in the 3D Engine market — developer willingness to switch engines
?? Next-gen rendering pipelines (Unreal 5 innovations, Gaussian Splats, etc.) and what they mean for developers in the short-to-medium term
?? The strength of PC Gaming
???? The growth of UGC within PC games
? The importance of IP, and how it’s shifting towards game-first IP

10 个月Thanks for sharing. Didn't check out the full post on Substack, but I'm curious to know -- what do you think about how the Apple Vision Pro might disrupt (or not) the VR industry? Based on my initial read on the launch, I'm seeing "no big changes here".

10 个月Im not as optimistic as the article. First of all many layoffs happened because 2023 was successful year for the PC and Consoles. However in the bigger scope, there wasn't enough room for so many AAA games, what caused many studios struggle to release the game with with the success. Mobile struggle and will struggle even more with the cost of scaling the game, the reason is effectiveness of UA channels which is even not near to what it was before. Add to this fingerprinting depreciation soon and we will see more companies struggling as user value will drop down again. Adapt or die, hypercasuals are already dead Quality over quantity. Iterating on older products is much more efficient and less risky than creating new games. Article looks very optimistic into new technology, but where is the money to support development of such a games? Web3 is bullshit. Not wasting time to write about that.
