Scaling Back to Scale Up
Quantum Gaming’s Project Porcupine Approach
In the fast-paced world of iGaming technology, expansion is often seen as the primary indicator of success. The more brands you launch, the more markets you enter, the better—right? Well, not quite.
At Quantum Gaming, we’ve always been at the forefront of rapid deployment. Our tech was built to streamline casino launches, capable of spinning up a new brand in just four weeks at a fraction of traditional costs. It was an exciting, scalable model, and on paper, it made perfect sense: democratize iGaming, allow anyone to enter, and provide best-in-class technology to fuel their operations. But here’s where reality kicks in—capacity matters more than sheer volume.
The Hedgehog Concept: Why Less is More
This realization came full circle during a conversation with Alex Thomson Mizzi when he first joined the Wicked Games team. He described a concept that deeply resonated with our leadership team—the Hedgehog Concept. Originally coined by Jim Collins in Good to Great, this idea emphasizes the intersection of three critical elements:
In our case, we weren’t just in the business of launching casinos—we were in the business of scalability, performance, and long-term success for our partners. But when you overextend, you dilute your impact, putting unnecessary strain on infrastructure, development teams, and client engagement. Scaling too fast without the right capacity planning doesn’t just slow you down—it creates operational friction that reduces efficiency.
Enter Project Porcupine: Trimming the Excess to Fuel Growth
Our COO, Phillip Pistauer agreed with the concept but found the name “Hedgehog” didn’t quite have the edge. So, in true Quantum fashion, it was promptly renamed to Project Porcupine. The idea remained the same, but the branding got an upgrade.

Project Porcupine became our internal shift towards optimizing quality over quantity. Instead of launching brands indiscriminately, we refocused on brands with strong foundations, committed operators, and long-term sustainability. This meant:
And the results? Immediate. We saw stronger engagement across our core brands, better product performance, and a noticeable uplift in overall platform efficiency.
Scaling Down to Scale Up: The Power of Strategic Retraction
One of the biggest misconceptions in business is that growth is always about addition—more brands, more products, more features. But true scalability often requires subtraction. By removing inefficiencies and focusing on what we do best, we’ve positioned Quantum Gaming for sustainable, long-term expansion rather than short-term churn.
Scaling back doesn’t mean stepping down. It means stepping up in a way that allows for structured, controlled growth. It means ensuring that every brand on our platform isn’t just another domain running casino software but a thriving, high-impact operation.
So here’s a huge thanks to Alex for the inspiration and to Philip for making sure our internal branding remains on point. And, of course, to our Quantum team, who continue to refine, optimize, and push the boundaries of what’s possible in iGaming.
