Scales rebalance towards Adaptation on Climate Change in London
With the release the London Climate Resilience Review by Mayor of London office, suggesting inadequate investment in flood defence leaves capital at risk, let us not forget the greatest legacy of the GLC , the Thames Barrier. Its still protecting us from floods as ever today!
Now mitigation through new solutions and technology is critical but in parallel adaptation needs a lot more attention. The Thames Barrier proved to be a great example of this but we need to take note of its time scales. It was thought of in the 1950's; proven in the 1960's and then built in the 1970;s and Londoners have relied on it since the 1980's, saving billions.
Unfortunately the chances of something like this being built now during a climate emergency is virtually nil at present, as the powers that let Regional and London government build it were taken away in the 1980's. So we need disparately devolved government again to Regional and London government in London to just get on with it, including maybe financial ones like land tax and other property tax reforms.
